This historical CD contains some of guitarist Wes Montgomery's first recordings; in fact only three small-group songs predate these performances. The then-obscure guitarist is heard in two different quintets, both of which include his brothers Buddy (on piano) and Monk (playing electric bass). The earlier set has Harold Land's tenor as a lead voice while altoist Pony Poindexter takes his place on the later date, Wes's sound was already quite recognizable and he contributes six originals which alternate with Harold Land's "Hymn for Carl" and four standards

Led by the percussion section of Martinez, Louie Ramirez, and Ernie Newsum, trumpeter Martry Sheller, saxophonist Bobby Porcelli, pianist Arty Jenkins, and bassist Billy Salter tear through a selection that can deemed erroneously to be salsa, but is actually a magnificent Latin and jazz fusion of the highest order. Most notable tracks are "Delilah," "Otra Vez" with its 12/16 meter, "I Remember Carmen" with its burning alto solos, and "Nica's Dream" with its nocturnal, steamy rhythm built on a small bop figure from the Sonny Stitt book. How this session got set up we may never know. The mainstream, Latin-oriented, mellow bebop of the Latin Jazz Quintet meets the iconoclastic Eric Dolphy, one of the first wave of 1960s avant-jazz players--and things work out very nicely for all concerned.
Dolphy's saxophone, usually one of the most vocalized horn sounds of the '60s, is slightly restrained here. But his flute playing is always extremely lyrical even at its most abstract, and he fits in well with the Quintet's soul-jazz groove on "Sunday Go Meetin'." "Blues in 6/8" is another soul-jazz mid-tempo cooker, and Dolphy, indulging in some straight-ahead blues playing, sounds as if he's having a swell time. Gene Casey plays a direct, lyrical, sparkling piano in the vein of Horace Silver, and the percussionists keep everything percolating steadily throughout

I have never heard of pianist Don Shirley before, when I saw this bald-headed guy look from this LP cover on this Atlantic release from 1972, I picked it up right away, to my surprise finding a neo-classical acoustic release featuring the leader on piano & organ, along with James Boyd and Juri Taht on cellos and Kenneth Fricker on bass. Production by Joel Dorn.
