Mal Waldron was a remarkably versatile piano player, able to work in many different contexts, from Billie Holiday to Eric Dolphy. This ability made him invaluable as musical director for Prestige Records, where the recording dates were often little more than jam sessions. Soul Eyes: The Mal Waldron Memorial Album collects 11 tracks, recorded between 1955 and 1962, that Waldron played on and/or led, including a mammoth version of the title cut, featuring John Coltrane, Kenny Burrell, Paul Chambers, and others, that clocks in at 17-plus minutes. Although all the cuts have been previously released (not always under Waldron's name), it's nice to have this overview of one of his most fertile periods. ~ Sean Westergaard

An excellent and flexible trumpeter, Ted Curson will always be best-known for his work with Charles Mingus' 1960 quartet (which also included Eric Dolphy and Dannie Richmond). He studied at Granoff Musical Conservatory; moved to New York in 1956; played in New York with Mal Waldron, Red Garland, and Philly Joe Jones; and recorded with Cecil Taylor (1961). After the 1959-1960 Mingus association (which resulted in some classic recordings), Curson co-led a quintet with Bill Barron (1960-1965), played with Max Roach, and led his own groups. He spent time from the late '60s on in Europe (particularly Denmark) but has had a lower profile than one would expect since his return to the U.S. in 1976. Ted Curson has led sessions for Old Town (1961), Prestige, Fontana, Atlantic, Arista, Inner City, Interplay, Chiaroscuro, and several European labels, but has barely been on records at all since 1980. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Hailing from New York, alto saxophonist Monty Waters played with James Brown, B.B. King, Miles Davis and John Coltrane in the 50's and 60's and was one of the founders of the New Yorker independent club "Loft". He has recorded with Ronnie Boykins, Billy Higgins and Charlie Persip, among others. In recent years he has been working in Europe, with Mal Waldron, Sonny Murray, Ray Brown and Chet Baker in France and with Embryo, Tom Nicholas, Wolfgang Lackerschmidt and Marty Cook - the latter collaboration resulting in the 1993 album "Borderlines" * in Germany. Since 1995, one of Waters' main projects has been a duo with the German guitarist Titus Waldenfels, presenting a mixture of jazz and blues (with Monty not only playing saxophone but also singing) to audiences of renowned jazz festivals and in notable jazz clubs (such as the Unterfahrt in Munich). Monty's latest CD, "Moonlight in Slovakia", issued on Ladybug in 1999, has him playing with the L'ubo Šamo Quintet, a Sloviakian group - consisting of violinist L'ubo Šamo, pianist Peter Adamkovic, bassist Martin Marincak and drummer Gejza Szabados plus guitarist Titus Waldenfels - and features two of Waters' duo recordings with Waldenfels. ~ Chris Genzel, All Music Guide

Organ master Jimmy McGriff may have studied formally at Juilliard and at Philadelphia's Combe College of Music, but there's nothing fancy about his music. It's basic to the bone, always swinging and steeped in blues and gospel. McGriff's brand of jazz is about feeling. “That's the most important thing,” he says.

Blues has been the backbone of most of the major jazz organists, including Jimmy Smith and Jack McDuff, but throughout his 42-year recording career, McGriff has stuck closer to the blues than any of them. “People are always classifying me as a jazz organist, but I'm more of a blues organ player,” he insists. “That's really what I feel.”

Blue to the Bone presents a change of pace from the usual organ combo instrumentation with the addition of Al Grey on trombone. Grey contributed "Ain't That Funk for You" and other than the last tune, sticks with the plunger style that made him a star with the Count Basie band.
