“ Recorded the first day of February in 1963, but not released for a few years, Bucket! is a fairly typical Jimmy Smith session, featuring the organist running through a selection of originals and standards with guitarist Quentin Warren and drummer Donald Bailey in tow. The vibe is relaxed, not too laid-back but hardly energetic, as the trio easily strolls through bluesy ballads and lightly swinging soulful ballads. It's damning with faint praise to say that nothing exceptional ever happens but it doesn't need to happen, but that is truly the case here. Bucket! is simply a middle-of-the-road affair, not quite boring but never quite compelling either. It's good easy-listening music, finding an organ master kicking out seven tunes (the 2000 CD reissue contains nine cuts, including the previously unreleased "Trouble in Mind" and an alternate take of "Sassy Mae") without any pressure and with a minimal sense of style. That makes for a pretty good record, one that hardcore fans will find satisfying after they've exhausted the greater Smith sessions, but not one that will captivate the attentions of anyone who isn't a dyed-in-the-wool Jimmy Smith aficionado. ”

Strange as it seems, after over 35 years on the scene, Hawkins seemed to discover the blues in 1958. A harmonic wizard who enjoyed improvising over the most complex chord changes, he finally dug into the blues around this period and learned to emphasize extroverted emotions. This LP finds him jamming joyously on two standards and four blues (including "Marchin' Along") with a sextet that also prominently features guitarist Tiny Grimes

Although organist Don Patterson is the leader of this set that in 1998 was reissued on a CD, the quintet date is most notable for the playing of trumpeter Howard McGhee. McGhee, who had not been heard from much on record for a few years, proves to still be in prime form. Altoist Charles McPherson, the young guitarist Pat Martino and drummer Billy James complete the group. The repertoire is particularly strong with two McGhee originals (including the memorable and haunting "Island Fantasy"), "Epistrophy," "Now's The Time" and a trumpet feature on "Donna Lee." Highly recommended

In 1984, clarinetists John Carter, Alvin Batiste, Jimmy Hamilton and David Murray (on bass clarinet) performed a concert that was recorded and released by India Navigation. Three years later, they regrouped for a studio session. Three selections are slightly "traditional" ("I Want to Talk About You," a Hamilton-Carter duet on "Perdido" and a brief "Don't Get Around Much Anymore"), but the bulk of this set is taken up with more advanced improvising, including Batiste's lengthy "Fluffy's Blues" and Murray's free improv "Mbizo." Intriguing music (Jimmy Hamilton really stretches himself); recommended to avant-garde listeners rather than Duke Ellington fans
