Called "one of the most distinctive of all pianists" by Allmusic.com, Garner showed that a "creative jazz musician can be very popular without watering down his music" or changing his personal style. He is referred to as a "brilliant virtuoso who sounded unlike anyone else" ,using an "orchestral approach straight from the swing era but …open to the innovations of bop." Garner's ear and technique owed as much to practice as to a natural gift. His distinctive style could swing like no other, but some of his best recordings are ballads, such as his best-known composition, "Misty". Although "Misty" rapidly became a standard with singers – and was famously featured in Clint Eastwood's Play Misty for Me (1971) – it was never a favorite with fellow instrumentalists.
Garner may have been inspired by the example of Earl Hines, a fellow Pittsburgh resident but 18 years his senior, and there were resemblances in their elastic approach to timing and the use of the right-hand octaves. Errol's style however, was unique and had neither obvious forerunners nor competent imitators although, at an amateur level, more players attempted to imitate him than any other pianist in jazz history. A key factor in his sound was the independence of his hands.

While it has been a minute since Actress-model-Vocalist Vanessa Williams stepped into the recording studio to radiate for us once again, its apparent she chooses a particular fragment of music to lean on. That fragmentation leans on the ever clear spirit of jazz music. As I listened to "The Real Thing", I was challenged to review this CD, my friends, from different angles. One from a Rhythm & Blues side, the other from a jazz vocalist side. Although I believe Vanessa could handle any platform of music if ever given to her, sometimes we want to hear some from our favorite aspects of her career - Rhythm & Blues.

There’s a fair bit of duplication between this 1985 vinyl LP on Mr R&B Records and my previous Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson post, “Primary Cuts”. Nevertheless it’s worth downloading for the unduplicated tracks which include some of his small group sides recorded for King. There's also sides recorded with the Cootie Williams Orchestra and Mr Cleanhead’s own big band. And that is indeed Mr Vinson himself crooning on “Time After Time”.

This cd is amazing in itself. It is not "heavy" per say, but there are incredible guitar leads. It is up and pumping blues that will have you grooving. Anybody who likes guitars, and more guitars will surely enjoy this one. Everything on this cd works. The organ, drums, base, and of course the amazing guitar riffage. Any fan of rock-n-roll needs to get this one.
