Gentleman of Keyboard, a Giants of Jazz compilation released in 1990, is a jumbled assemblage of great jazz recordings made between May 1934 and July 1957 by pianist and bandleader Teddy Wilson (1912-1986). The list of collective personnel on this one disc is staggering, as Wilson consistently worked with innovators and individualists who decisively shaped the evolution of jazz over the years. Among literally dozens of noteworthy participants are vocalists Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald as well as tenor saxophonists Ben Webster and Lester Young. Wilson is also heard in his famous role as a member of the Benny Goodman Quartet and Sextet [these performances alone warrant the admission fee - itsartolie]. In his biography, Beneath The Underdog, when asked “What would you do if you had your life to live all over again?”, Charles Mingus said: “I’d become a pimp, bigger and better than my cousin Billy Bones… I wouldn’t get involved with music or women at all, other than what they could do for me. My main motive for living would be getting money to buy my way out of a decaying society, that’s destroying itself while it tries to figure out what to do with the new kind of ‘black’ it produced.

“But I’d have nothing to do with black or white. I’d be a member of the raceless people of this earth. When one part of this uncivilised society got around to blowing up the others I’d be in some other country eating caviar and reading the news for the sole purpose of finding out where to move next to keep one jump ahead of the assholes who want to fight. But I’d keep me a loaded forty-five in event of any personal affront and my whores would be non-racist and agree fully with me and they’d carry forty-five automatics too.”

In a way, this show sort of encapsulates what Mingus said. Propelled by Jack Walrath’s trumpet with the famed bassist casting a watchful eye (and ear), amidst all that joviality there is a sleazy undertone, one that calls to mind darkened hallways and stairways; smoky joints and wheeling and dealing - this is not music to watch the world go by. Instead the listener gets the impression that Mingus is tearing the fabric of the music apart and trying to create something new. Again, there is that impending sense of violence that accompanies that force of creation.

For the 50th anniversary of Billie Holiday’s death, Daniel Yvinec’s L’Orchestre National Du Jazz had Alban Darche compose new arrangements for Holiday’s classic songs. So Skylark is given an Asian flavour in the instrumental colours of Chinese cymbals and gongs, while You’ve Changed and God Bless the Child are given avant-garde arrangements.

The featured vocalists are the up-and-coming Karen Lanaud, who brings out the romance of ballads such as Skylark, and European jazz/blues fixture, Ian Siegal, whose raspy Tom Waits vocal inflection squeezes out the melancholy in Holiday chestnuts such as Solitude.

But without free jazz saxophonist Archie Shepp’s involvement, the grit of Billie Holiday’s struggling life wouldn’t have been revisited. In this 90-min radio broadcast, Shepp only appears towards the end as a recorded voice reading out Holiday’s heartbreaking autobiography of how she got hired to sing as a jazz musician.

To reflect on Shepp’s symbolic role in this event, let’s remember what he himself once said: “We would give money to our political organizations to press leaflets. We would go up to Harlem. We would support whatever was going on at the time, Urban League, the more radical Black Panthers, whatever. I played concerts, gigs, spoke on the streets. I was engaged. You don’t find that these days, but why would you?

“I think the world has been made more comfortable. It is the world of Oprah Winfreys today. She is the model for black women, in the sense that she is a billionaire. I don’t think she does much. She is typical. There is nothing against Ms. Winfrey. She is a very talented and a beautiful woman, but I don’t think she is very effective even though she is rich. That is typical of our people today with young billionaires and all these musicians and Michael Jordan and Shaq and Whitney Houston.

“I think they form a class of people today that for young black people, they are set up by the establishment to be seen as models, but in fact, these are really hollow men and hollow women. They are people without any clue of their own political history or historical knowledge of where they come from, even their understanding of their own culture and what they produce and its meaning to other things that are produced within their own culture and so called jazz music. They don’t see any relationships and they don’t make any relationships.

“The people who should really be controlling jazz today should be Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson and these people. They should be putting their money into that kind of production. Of course, jazz doesn’t make any money, but they could use it as a tax write off. White folks do.

“The problem with the Negro is that I think is that basically we still haven’t recovered from our slave mentality. Look at all this music made by black people. It is a US$13 billion industry and there is not a single jazz club of any stature owned by a black man or woman in the United States. If you know one, tell me.”

Yanow is succinct. “Although he has gained a little more recognition in the mid-1990s, Detroit-based trumpeter Marcus Belgrave remains an often-overlooked great. For pianist Kirk Lightsey's quintet set, Belgrave is teamed with tenor saxophonist Jean Toussaint, bassist Santi DeBriano, drummer Eddie Gladden and the leader on six little known pieces; including originals by Kenny Dorham ("Windmill"), DeBriano, Toussaint and a pair from Belgrave. The modern hard bop date has plenty of fine solos and is easily recommended to straight-ahead jazz collectors.” I’d recommend it to lots of jazz listeners, not just collectors.

On January 3, 1958, Gene Ammons led one of his last all-star jam sessions for Prestige. The most notable aspect to this date (which resulted in two albums of material) is that it featured among its soloists John Coltrane, on alto. This CD, a straight reissue of one of the original LPs, includes baritonist Pepper Adams, the tenor of Paul Quinichette and Coltrane on two of the four selections and Jerome Richardson’’s flute during three of the songs in addition to a fine rhythm section (pianist Mal Waldron, bassist George Joyner and drummer Art Taylor). This set consists of three of Waldron’’s originals in addition to the standard ballad “It Might as Well Be Spring” and it (along with the CD The Big Sound) fully documents the productive day. - AMG
