'Mozart in Egypt' is a 1997 album by various artists. It represents a fusion of Mozart's work with the sounds, rhythms and instruments typical of contemporary Egyptian music. The album saw considerable success in continental Europe, especially France, but had only limited success elsewhere. In August 2005 a second volume (ASIN B0009PEYVW) was released in Europe only, entitled Mozart in Egypt 2.
There are problems, of course, in trying to marry Mozart and Egypt. Western music takes pride in the vertical arts of harmony and counterpoint. Arabic music is linear, one event following another. The result then is what the producers describe as a "crazy diagonal." And yet it works. Mozart sounds just fine on the oud [ancestor of the lute], and its way of decorating a melodic line is not at all dissimilar to the Western approach. Best of all is hearing the piano and oud together, when one player takes the melodic line, the other harmony.

No artist captures the sense of heartfelt freewheeling joy and creativity better than Dan Siegel, whose 1987 album Northern Nights launched the keyboardist to instrumental stardom during ambitious early days of the contemporary jazz format. Siegel brilliantly blends the melodic and rhythmic pop sensibilities he's famous for with traditional jazz roots on his new release Sphere, which features some top L.A. players: bassists Brian Bromberg and Alex Al, saxophonist Bob Sheppard, percussionist Lenny Castro, drummer Joel Taylor and guitarists Allen Hinds and Darrell Crooks. He also reaches back across the years for some bona fide superstar contributions by contemporary jazz legends Larry Carlton and Tom Scott. It's a true full circle effect, as Carlton and Scott first recorded with the keyboardist on Siegel's 1982 self-titled Elektra album. 'Some of the songs on this album reminded me of music I recorded in the old days, so it made sense to bring Larry and Tom on board to add the same kind of magic. My goal with Sphere was to explore the acoustic route and essentially create my own unique vibe, rather than chase commercial airplay as many artists do these days,' says Siegel.

The Dutch musician Niles Philips creates a mixture of break beat music with funky elements, a touch of electronic ingredients and a slight raw edge. His style varies from lay back listening bits to catchy danceable grooves.
Niles Philips grew up with the electronic music scene (and the connected dance scene). This always kept him interested in the history of music “to move on”. Through the time he developed a huge passion for Soul music, Funk, Rare grooves and related styles from the mid to late 60’s. It where the drums and bass driven grooves with a slight, raw edge and catchy melodies that attracted his attention especially. As a musician Niles got more and more inspired by those “old grooves” and music originated from those grooves. He started to ask himself the question, if it would be possible for him to combine his view of “yesterday” with his perspective on music “today”. After a while of experimenting the result is a slightly raw style of “grooves”, with catchy melodies and sounds, build around bass and drums. In 2008 Niles’s first musical pieces in this style where signed by Timewarp music (GR).
