The second of three recordings by the trio Three of a Kind for Minor Music adds Stanley Turrentine as a special guest. The veteran tenor saxophonist seems stimulated by the young rhythm section, grooving to Dwayne Dolphin’s walking bass introduction to “On the Trail.” Their interpretation of Duke Ellington’s “I’m Just a Lucky So and So” is drenched in the blues, while “You and the Night and the Music” is far more deliberate and subtle than typical performances in a jazz setting, emphasizing its lyrical beauty. Pianist Peter Madsen penned three originals, including the rather funky “Backporch Overlooking Heaven” and the slightly dissonant Thelonious Monk-inspired “Monkey See Monkey Do,” as well as the upbeat but somewhat dark bossa nova “What’s Left for the Children.” Drummer Bruce Cox provides strong support throughout the date. This successful studio session is well worth acquiring, though it is out of print.

Review: Recorded live on June 29 and July 1, 1973, the music on this potent compilation came together in the famously open-minded atmosphere of the Montreux Jazz Festival, where blues and jazz were presented as bountiful branches of the same family tree. Additionally, Montreux Blues Festival 1973 acts as a sort of Maison de Blues sampler; the first three tracks, for example, also appear on Memphis Slim's Very Much Alive and in Montreux, a fabulous concert album with guitarist Freddy King sitting in on "Lend Me Your Love." Using sidemen from King's own band and also that of Little Milton, the producers were able to provide ample and able backing for Willie Mabon and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown. Guitarists involved in this interchangeable chemistry were Joe "Jammer" Wright and McHouston "Mickey" Baker, who also performed a couple of roughneck solo blues numbers as the opening act on June 29. Maison de Blues has brought out Baker's entire Montreux set under his title of Real Folk Blues. For a real kick, compare Gatemouth Brown's nearly 12-minute version of "The Drifter Rides Again" with its fiery sequel, the "Devil Blues," recorded in December 1974 by George Adams and Charles Mingus [see Charles Mingus Changes One on Atlantic Records]. Gatemouth's contribution to Montreux Blues Festival 1973 is particularly enjoyable, as the red hot "Louisiana Breakdown," the breakneck bluegrass "Highball for Gate," and a funky "Cajun Blues" lead directly to a really smart jam on Muddy Waters' "Got My Mojo Working." ”

Orgasm: The Very Best of the Westbound Years [(1972-1973) 1993]
The majority of music fans are familiar with the legendary Ohio Players through such mid- to late-’70s pop-funk hits as “Love Rollercoaster,” “Fire,” and “Fopp.” What many don’t realize is that the band had been around since the ’60s, and released a trilogy of hard funk records from 1972-1973 on the Westbound label — Pain, Pleasure, and Ecstasy — that were easily comparable to the early-’70s classics by their rival Westbound labelmates, Funkadelic. And since the albums have been out-of-print for some time, the European import Orgasm: The Very Best of the Westbound Years is a solid collection of tracks from this era. Included is the 1972 novelty hit “Funky Worm,” as well as all the sizzling title tracks from the three albums. A pair of songs from outside the trilogy is added, “Climax” (one of the collection’s best tracks) and a cover of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” both from 1974. A previously unissued track, “Ain’t That Lovin’ You (For More Reasons Than One),” is tacked on the end, making Orgasm an excellent anthology of the Ohio Players’ early years, before they achieved mass mainstream success. Pianist Ellis Marsalis is in excellent form for this trio outing with bassist Bob Hurst and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts. The performances fall generally into the medium-tempo range, with Ellis scattering some witty song quotes throughout the lightly swinging renditions. The high points include one of the more delightful versions ever of Johnny Mandel's "Emily," some close interplay during "Little Niles" and a tongue-in-cheek version of "Limehouse Blues" that includes slapped bass, parade rhythms and Marsalis trying in vain to sound Dixielandish. One programming error should be noted: there is no such song as "Just Squeeze Me" and, rather than the one performed being Fats Waller's "Squeeze Me," it is actually Duke Ellington's "Squeeze Me, But Please Don't Tease Me."
