Release Review:

Eddie Marshall, a sax and flute man, digs a warm and fuzzy sound. On Cookin for You he concocts a contemporary jazz fiesta of Latin rhythms. Two cats from Pat Methenys band, Paul Wertico and Steve Rodby, are part of bands which run in size from four to nine. That latter packs a punch.

The approach is easy going. A few cuts challenge players creative juices, the best example being Pachelbels Canon in D: done in 6/8, the pieces solemn mood is ingeniously altered to embrace an expression of pure joy.

Originally issued on Savoy five years after Parker's death as Volume One in their "Jazz Immortal Series," the LP has now been digitally remastered and reissued on CD. The four tunes on AN EVENING AT HOME were, in fact, taped at Parker's apartment in New York at a party/jam session held by the saxophonist. Subsequently, as the liner notes claim, "Savoy had the good fortune of receiving the tapes of this session directly from Charlie Parker, himself." Parker never got around to providing any information about the personnel on his party's bandstand, so such details remain a mystery.

Festivities notwithstanding, the soloists come through loud and clear, and it's a pleasure to hear Bird stretch out on "There's a Small Hotel" without having to operate within the three-minute confines of the recording studio. He's joined by a standard rhythm section of piano, bass and drums, a saxophonist suspected to be Wardell Gray, and a particularly fluent electric guitarist.

With Oscar Petersons passing almost 2 years ago we lost one of the two remaining Jazz Piano Giants whose careers went back to the late 1940's (the other is Dave Brubeck). Peterson was a
giant in every sense. 250lbs in weight and over 6ft tall but luckily for us a giant of Jazz Piano as well.
This recording is also part of a four disc set and contains at the moment the last available recordings before he had a stroke and lost most of the use of his left hand for the rest of his
career. So here he still in near peak form. Herb Ellis is on guitar, Ray Brown is on bass and Bobby Durham is on drums.
Evidence of Petersons great talent can found throughout the album. I'd give special mention to "Yours is my Heart alone", which was always a showstopper. "Wheatland" is a beautiful tune and one of his best compositions. Peterson wrote a lot more quality music than he is ever given credit for. "Blues Etude" is Oscars encore to end all encores. As always taken at a furious tempo, and incorporating elements of fast be-bop, blues, boogie-woogie, stride Piano and a lot more besides. This track makes you realise what a devastating blow it must have been when he lost the use of his left-hand. I imagine this is the kind of encore Oscar Peterson played in his younger days in case there were any pianists out there who thought they were going to follow him!

In the '50s, Dave Brubeck managed to accomplish something that few post-World War II jazzmen accomplished: He enjoyed a certain amount of acceptance in the pop market. And the interesting thing is that he did it without taking a pop approach — the pianist played instrumental jazz interpretations of pop songs, but he didn't play pop versions of pop songs. This 2002 release takes listeners back to a time when Brubeck was at the height of his popularity; recorded live on December 14, 1953, most of these previously unreleased performances are from the same concert that gave listeners the first Jazz at the College of the Pacific. Brubeck's quartet includes alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, bassist Ron Crotty, and drummer Joe Dodge, and this lineup is the essence of cool jazz. Essentially, cool jazz was a form of bebop; Brubeck's cohesive group is definitely playing bop changes on lyrical performances of "How High the Moon," "Love Walked In," and other standards. But they play them in a subtle, relaxed, understated fashion, and that use of subtlety is what makes Vol. 2 cool jazz. Brubeck and Desmond (who always had a gorgeous tone) both swing, but not in an aggressive, intense way — they were introspective players who realized the value of restraint. In addition to the 1953 performances, this CD contains a bonus track that finds an unaccompanied Brubeck performing "I Found a New Baby" at the same Stockton, CA, college in 1942. At that point, he was still playing swing piano and had yet to become distinctive or recognizable; even so, it's fascinating to hear what he sounded like before becoming well-known. Although not essential, this is a pleasing disc that serious Brubeck devotees will enjoy.

World class! It’s a term often used, often loosely, sometimes even carelessly … and what does it mean anyway? When used in context of a recording artist’s press release, the author’s goal is generally to create some hype, give the impression that the subject is just as talented as those whom roam the stage internationally. A more humble definition could be that when played, the recording could easily present equal parts enjoyment to anyone, anywhere in the world, irrespective of language, colour, religion or creed. Whatever the definition, it can be said without fear of contradiction, that Australian bassist extraordinaire Wayne Jones’ debut solo album Forgotten Melody’ is ALL class.

From the opening few bars of track one of this album, the chuggalong “Tom’s Shuffle’, there’s no disputing Wayne’s amazing command of the bass as he plucks and slaps with a fluidity and freedom that many others could only ever aspire to. While Ron, Ash, and James provide feel good melody flashes, and Gerry keeps it all tight and together, Wayne can’t help but slide out of the pocket and into the forefront with some astonishingly liquid bass licks.

With track two, the title track “Forgotten Melody”, Wayne slips into something more sublime. It’s an after dark jazz cocktail featuring Wayne’s lead melody on his Status six string with the immaculate production values capturing every resonance of his strings.

‘Gone for a Walk’, ‘Hole in My Pocket’ and ‘Written Hour’ follow, each providing a joyous vibe, a fusion of early morning anticipation and late night romance or reflection.
