(By RJ-Brego)

Fanfare Ciocarlia
Fanfare Ciocărlia (alternate spelling Ciocârlia) is a popular twelve-piece Roma brass band from the northeastern Romanian village of Zece Prăjini. The band began as a loose assemblage of part-time musicians playing at local weddings and baptisms. In October 1996, the German sound engineer and record producer Henry Ernst visited Zece Prajini and convinced a number of the musicians there to assemble a touring band. These musicians decided to name the band Fanfare Ciocărlia: Fanfare being a French word that has passed into Romanian and is used to designate a brass band; Ciocârlia being the Romanian word for the skylark.[1] Since their discovery by Ernst, who serves as their manager, they have played more than thousand concerts in more than 50 countries across the globe.
With historical roots in Austrian and Turkish military bands, Fanfare Ciocărlia's instrumental lineup includes trumpets, tenor and baritone horns, tubas, clarinets, saxophones, bass drum and percussion. Their song lyrics are usually either in Romani or Romanian. Their musical style stems primarily from the traditions of Roma and Romanian folk dance music, but they also borrow freely from Turkish, Bulgarian, Serbian and Macedonian musical styles, and they incorporate a number of tunes gleaned from international radio, Hollywood and Bollywood in their broad repertoire as well. They are best known for a very fast, high-energy sound, with complex rhythms and high-speed, staccato clarinet, saxophone and trumpet solos, sometimes performed at more than 200 beats per minute. They are also known for using no sheet music in their performances, sometimes randomly blasting their horns and clarinets in the middle of a song, and for playing old, battered instruments onstage.
The band won the BBC Radio 3 World Music Award for Europe in 2006. Their latest release is entitled Queens and Kings.
The band plays a cover version of "Born to Be Wild" in the film Borat.

Fanfare Ciocarlia - GILI GARABDI (2005)
With Gili Garabdi, Moldavia's Fanfare Ciocarlia offer an interesting premise -- what if gypsy musicians had gone to America and helped invent jazz? Then they illustrate their point by brassy, jazzy takes on the "James Bond Theme" and Duke Ellington's "Caravan." Obviously, they're joking a little, but it does help show their range in exemplary fashion as the brassy-heavy lineup (ten, plus two percussionists). They can do the usual gypsy style with consummate ease, whipping their way around complex melodies at hyper-speed, But they're really at their best when they swing, which they do in wonderful style on "Alili," while "Ma Maren Ma" includes guest singer Jony Lliev on something that's as close as the Balkans comes to blues. Passionate and consistent, this is their best album to date.

Boban Marković Orkestrar -
Boban Marković (Бобан Марковић) is a Serbian trumpet player and brass ensemble leader from Vladicin Han, frequently recognized as the greatest trumpet player to emerge from the Balkans. He and his brass band have
received world acclaim and won numerous awards.
The Boban Marković Orchestra has been the leading Balkan Brass Band in Serbia over the last 17 years. They are from Vladicin Han, Southern Serbia, which is obviously heard in their music. They have won several of the most important prizes ("Golden Trumpet", "First Trumpet" and "The Best Orchestra") at the "Brass bands meeting and competition" in Guča, the Guča trumpet festival, called "Dragačevski Sabor", which has been held every August in Central Serbia, since 1961. Every year "Sabor" gathers 20 of the best bands from all parts of Serbia, as well as some 300,000 people in the audience. Winning there means more jobs for the bands, but also is so prestigious, that no one misses the festival and all the bands play for free.
Boban Marković Orkestar won the "Best Orchestra" prize at 40th "Sabor" in Guca, August 2000. They won the "Best concert 2000." prize for their concert with Lajko Felix. In Guča, at “Dragačevski Sabor 2001” Boban Marković won “The First Trumpet”, what is officially the best prize there and the most wanted among the musicians. It was the first time ever that any musician there got all five marks “10” from all of the jury members. Since winning, he has decided to stop competing.
Since 2002, Marko Marković, an exceptionally talented player and the band leader's son, has played full time. Marko was said to practice ten hours a day before joining with the band. During the two years he spent touring with the band, 17 year old Marko became the main soloist and arranger of the band. Both Boban and Marko are featured in the movie “Usti Opre,” a documentary with other famous Gypsy musicians, and also in Guča, a documentary about the Serbian Trumpet festival. "Usti Opre" is to be premiered at the festival in August 2005.

The orkestar is featured on two tracks on "Srbija: Sounds Global," a series of compilations released in 2000 by Radio B92, and on the opening track of “Srbija: Sounds Global 2,” which was released November 2002 by B92.
They performed music for one movie of Emir Kusturica: "Underground" as well as in a few other movies in the Balkans. They are the main characters of the award winning documentary film "Competition" and more recently featured in "Guča", a documentary about the Serbian trumpet festival. Marko Marković also played the role of Romeo in the music film Gucha - Distant Trumpet by Dusan Milic.
They have played festivals and concerts in Portugal, Greece, Switzerland, Belgium, USA, Canada, Romania, Holland, Hungary, Great Britain, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Poland, Italy, Austria, Monaco, Germany, France, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Israel, Spain, Slovenia, Slovakia, Croatia, Czech Republic and many wedding parties everywhere.
In 2000 at the Pepsi Sziget festival in Hungary, they played at "World Music stage" in front of a 15,000-strong crowd. The British britpop group Oasis was supposed to start at the same time, but as a good portion of the audience was at the Boban Marković Orkestar concert, Oasis waited 30 minutes for the band to finish. At the same time Network Records, released the double CD “Golden Brass Summit” – Anthology of 40 years in Guča, for which Boban Marković Orkestar opens the album with 4 tracks.
The regular brass band sound is improved with another 2 percussionists. Since October 1999 they have also been performing with the young violin player Lajko Felix a programme arranged by Lajko Felix and Boban Marković. Lately, the band have opened up to more collaborations, one with Austrian duet Attwenger and the other with Frank London's Klezmer Brass All Stars Di Shikere Kapelye. Together they formed the Brotherhood of Brass.

Balkan Beat Box
Balkan Beat Box is a world music duo consisting of ex-Gogol Bordello member Ori Kaplan and Tamir Muskat of Firewater and Big Lazy. As a musical project they often cooperate with a host of other musicians both in the studio as well as on stage. Their current live crew consist of Tomer Yosef, Billy Levy, Ben Hendler, Itamar Ziegler, Dana Leung, Eyal Talmudi, Jeremiah Lockwood, and Peter Hess. Amongst their other collaborators are Victoria Hannah, the Bulgarian Chicks, Uri Kinrut, and gnawa player Hassan Ben Jaffar.
Co-founders Ori Kaplan and Tamir Muskat both grew up in Israel, but met in Brooklyn. Both had grown up with music and Kaplan had been a klezmer clarinetist, while Muskat was a drummer in a punk band. They began playing together and had trouble finding a style that they felt represented themselves, so they decided to create one. They established their own unique sound by fusing the musical styles of Jewish klezmer, Mediterranean and Balkan traditions with hip-hop and dancehall beats . The group was extremely influenced by Jamaican dub, another influence visible in their hybrid musical form. Balkan Beat Box’s goal was to take ancient and traditional musical traditions and fuse those with hip-hop in order to create a new mix of musical styles out of the traditional world music context that would appeal to listeners in a club or a dancehall. As children, they had felt that traditional music was outdated and felt as though it did not adequately reflect their experiences of the growing world culture, so hoped to bring new relevance to these old traditional musical forms. They also hoped to encourage and foster peace between citizens around the world by combining traditional music from various areas in the world, hoping that by doing this they can create peace, and believe in the elimination of political borders. At one point, the group even brought a Palestinian rapper on stage at a concert in Israel and members were pleased when the audience responded positively to him and his musi.
Balkan Beat Box’s first album was released in 2005 and their 2007 follow up, entitled “Nu-Med” both received global acclaim. While their first, self-titled album focused more on Mediterranean sounds, their new album included Arabic and Spanish influences. The song Bulgarian Chicks off their new album has already become popular in clubs and dancehalls, proving that the music scene is ready to embrace diverse and hybrid musical forms.

Šaban Bajramović
Šaban Bajramović (Cyrillic: Шабан Бајрамовић) (April 16, 1936 – June 8, 2008) was Serbian Romani musician.
He was born in Niš, Serbia (then Yugoslavia), where he attended primary school for only the first four years. On quitting school, he picked up his musical education on the street and wherever he could, as others of his people have always done.
At 19 he ran away from the army out of love for a girl. As a deserter, he was sentenced to three years prison on the island Goli otok, but as he told the military court they could not hold him for so long as he could survive, they raised his punishment to five and a half years. He survived as he was a good goalkeeper in the prison football team. Because of his nimbleness and speed, they called him "Black Panther". Soon he forced his way into the prison orchestra that played, among other things, jazz (mostly Louis Armstrong, Sinatra, and sometimes John Coltrane) with Spanish and Mexican pieces. He liked to say that he had read 20.000 books in his life, most of them while in prison. He also said that the prison on Goli otok was his university of life where he formed his philosophy, adding that a person who has never been in prison is not a person at all.
After Goli otok, his intensive music career began. He made his first record in 1964 and since then has made 15-20 LPs and about 50 singles. He is believed to have composed 650 compositions. Šaban also composed the official Roma people anthem "Djelem, Djelem" in 1964. Later, in 1969, new lyrics for the song were written by Zarko Jovanovic, 1969. With his first major earnings, he bought a white Mercedes and hired two bodyguards. The story says that he soon lost his Mercedes gambling.
In 2008, it was revealed that Bajramović was living impoverished in Niš with serious health complications and was no longer able to walk. The government of Serbia intervened to provide him with some funds. He died in Niš on June 8, 2008, from a heart attack.
Quotes
Over the years, his music has been constantly stolen, copied, and imitated by both famous and unknown musicians. Promises and contracts have proven worthless. Actually, he's never been interested in protecting his work. Where others would have earned millions, he's lived as he's always lived: from day to day, making music, going wherever he wants, and not recognising any limits at all. Dragi Šestić - Mostar Sevdah Reunion
It is difficult to stay objective while listening to this masterpiece. The saying goes that no one should go down on one’s knees and bow one’s head before a living human being, but in this case an exception should be made.
Mladen Hlubna, Oslobođenje, Bosnia, December 6, 2001
The Serbian singer is clearly a giant talent, comparable in his own way to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan or Mari Boine Persen, someone capable of bringing their music to life with such vivid spirituality that it vaults with ease over the most impenetrable cultural barriers. His voice combines the anguish of rai with the soulfulness of fado - a sort of Balkan gypsy jazz

Esma Redžepova
Esma Redžepova is a Romani Macedonian vocalist, songwriter, and humanitarian born in Skopje, Socialist Republic of Macedonia, then Yugoslavia. During her life she has performed in more than 8000 concerts in 30 countries, with her late husband Stevo Teodosievski she has fostered forty-seven children, and she has received numerous accolades for her humanitarian work. By her own account she has created more than 500 works of art. These include 108 singles, 20 albums, and 6 movies.
Early Life and Background
Esma was born on August 8, 1943, in the predominately Romani Šuto Orizari municipality of Skopje, now capital of the Republic of Macedonia. She is the second youngest of six children. Her mother was a Turkish Muslim, while her father was a Serb born in Tirana, Albania. His grandmother and grandfather were an Iraqi Jew and a Catholic Roma respectively. Her family was relatively (but not abjectly) poor growing up, her father working variously as a porter, singer, drummer, circus strongman and shoe shine. Her parents stressed that all six children finish primary school. At age nine Esma was introduced by one of her brothers to a local Romani music organisation, where she was able to quickly learn complicated rhythms. Her mother encouraged her musical gifts and Esma and her brother soon joined their school's folklore group.
In 1957, age 14, she was personally invited to sing at a school talent contest for Radio Skopje. This concert proved to be a turning point—not only did she place first, beating out 57 other schools and winning 9000 dinars, but national band leader and future husband Stevo Teodosievski also happened to be in attendance. After securing permission from her parents, Esma began touring with his musical ensemble. Legend has it she left home with a single suitcase filled with one dress and one Cocek costume.
Present
In recent years, Esma has remained popular throughout the Balkans. In 2004, she recorded a duet with Eurovision performer Toše Proeski called "Magija".
Her best known single Čaje Šukarije is the feature song on the 2006 Borat movie soundtrack, which she claims was used without her permission. As of December 16th, 2006 together with Naat Veliov from Kočani Orkestar she is planning an 800,000 euro ( USD 1,000,000) lawsuit against the producers of the film. The movie Gypsy Caravan (2007) features Esma as one of five Romani music acts on their tour through the USA.

Mahala Rai Banda
Mahala Rai Banda are the latest discovery of Crammed Discs, the Belgian-based label that brought us Kocani Orkestar and the Taraf de Haidouks. As a matter of fact, Crammed executive Stephane Karo plays percussion in this band that formed to marry two Romanian musics - the Clejani string and cimbalom groups and the urban brass bands. Mahala Rai Banda walks the line between traditional Romany Romanian music and the electronic pop music called Manele - exciting you with their funky drum kit, electric bass and brass while singing songs such as Red Bula - 'The drink that gives you energy to dance all night and feel very sexy towards the girls'.
