Erroll Garner - Play It Again, Erroll!
Label: Columbia (Double LP)
Release: 1975
Bitrate: 320 kbps

"Born in Pittsburgh in 1921 (Sy Johnson's biographical note in The Erroll Garner Songbook has June 15, 1923 as Garner's birthdate), Errol Garner started playing piano at the age of two (three according to Johnson). He never learned to read music, probably because it was never a necessity for him. He learned to play the 'novelty' styles of Zez Confrey and others from listening to 78 records, a style which used steady left hand chord rhythms to support very free right-hand melodic interpretations. This provided a perfect basis for the hard-swinging jazz style that Garner was to pioneer.
At the age of seven, Garner began appearing on radio station KDKA in Pittsburgh with a group called the Candy Kids, and by the age of eleven he was playing on the Allegheny riverboats. Garner began to attract attention after he moved to New York in the early forties, and shortly afterwards he made his first recordings. By 1950, Garner had established himself an international reputation, and from that point until his death on January 2, 1977, he made countless tours both at home and abroad, and produced a huge volume of recorded work.

Garner's style evolved out of the 'novelty rags' of the twenties. More contemporary jazz influences include Earl Hines, another Pittsburgh native, and the rhythm compings of Freddie Green (Count Basie's longtime guitarist). But Garner was ultimately a very idiosyncratic player, and he doesn't fit well into any of the standard piano style groupings of 40's and 50's jazz. His characteristic traits are of course his steady, guitaristic, left hand compings, and, most obviously, his octaval treatments of melodies and solo lines. The major seventh arpeggio in octaves which introduces Garner's biggest hit, Misty is an example. Another typical Garnerism is the pizzicato, super-syncopated introduction. These intros are often highly independent of the main part of the piece. They range from fanciful to sassy, but always their choppy staccato serves to highten the driving effect once Garner turns on his relentless left hand rhythm."

Gerry Mulligan - Something Borrowed, Something Blue
Rec: July, 19, 1966
Label: Limelight
Format: Mono
Bitrate: 320 kbps

This unusual quintet set finds Gerry Mulligan playing alto rather than baritone on four of the six selections. Tenor-saxophonist Zoot Sims co-stars and, with the assistance of a fine rhythm section (pianist Warren Bernhardt, bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Dave Bailey), the complementary horns explore Bix Beiderbecke's "Davenport Blues," the standard "New Orleans," "Sometime Ago" and three obscure but worthwhile Mulligan originals.

This forgotten collector's item (the LP has not been available for decades) features swinging music with plenty of fine moments.

Personnel:
Bass - Eddie Gomez
Drums - David Bailey*
Other [Liner Notes By] - Willis Conover
Piano - Warren Bernhardt
Producer - Hal Mooney
Saxophone [Baritone, Alto], Arranged By - Gerry Mulligan
Saxophone [Tenor] - Zoot Sims

Gerry Mulligan - Something Borrowed, Something Blue track list:

Gerry Mulligan & The Concert Jazz Band at the Village Vanguard
Year: 1960
Total time: 40:51
24-bit digital transfer
Bitrate: 320 kbps

Of all the recordings made by Gerry Mulligan's Concert Jazz Band in the 1960s, this is the definitive one. There are many high points, including "Body and Soul" {which has fine solos from the baritone/leader and valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer}, "Come Rain or Come Shine," and the swinging "Let My People Be," but "Blueport" takes honors. On the latter, after hot solos by Mulligan, trombonist Willie Dennis, and Jim Reider on tenor, Mulligan and trumpeter Clark Terry have a lengthy trade-off that is quite hilarious with a countless number of quotes from different songs; at one point they trade off cities. This music is essential.

Gerry Mulligan {Baritone Saxophone, Piano and Arranger}

Ron Carter_Jim Hall - Live at Village West
Year: 1982/1984
Label: Concord Jazz (2001)
Total time: 58:45
Bitrate: 320 kbps

The second live collaboration between bassist Ron Carter and guitarist Jim Hall follows their first recording together by a decade, but their chemistry together is every bit as strong, if not improved. Other than the occasional sound of the bar cash register, there is little in the way of background noise as the audience remains transfixed to the intricate improvisations of the duo, along with their solid comping for one another. The fare includes brilliant renditions of standards such as "All the Things You Are" and "Embraceable You"; classic jazz works like "Bag's Groove," "St. Thomas," and "Blue Monk"; along with originals like Carter's stunning "New Waltz" (with its very abstract improvised arrangement) and Hall's infectious "Down From Antigua," which deserves to become a jazz standard. Highly recommended.

Jim Hall (Guitar)

Gerry Mulligan - Lonesome Boulevard
Year: 1989
Audio CD: August 7, 1990
Label: A&M (1990)
Bitrate: 320 kbps

The 1989 Gerry Mulligan Quartet (with pianist Bill Charlap, bassist Dean Johnson and drummer Richie De Rosa) is well featured on this enjoyable set, performing "Splendor in the Grass" and nine recent Gerry Mulligan compositions including "Lonesome Boulevard," "The Flying Scotsman" and "Good Neighbor Thelonious." Baritonist Mulligan deserves great credit for the consistency of his recordings during the previous 40 years. This CD is easily recommended for the leader remained very much in his prime.

I'VE BEEN VERY FORTUNATE over the recent years of the quartet, to have fine musicians who also happen to be good people. I've been lucky to have Tom Fay, Mitchel Forman, Harold Danko and Dill Mays on piano; Frank Luther, George Duvivier and Mike Formanek on bass; Billy Hart, Butch Miles and Bob Rosengarden. on drums. Sometimes we became a quintet or sextet with John Scofield or Mike Santiago on guitar and Dave Samuels on vibes and percussion. I've also been lucky that as players leave, for one reason or another, they find their own replacements! For instance, Bill Mays sent Bill Charlap to the group and Frank Luther sent Dean Johnson.

TRAVELING BANDS LIVE VERY close together for long periods of time, and I value the friendships that have resulted from our association. So, as well as being a presentation of the current group I travel with all the time, this is an expression of thanks to all the previous players in the continuing quartet.

AS REGARDS THE MUSIC, I wrote nine new pieces, the titles of which are fairly self-explanatory, plus a theme of Dave Amram's I've always been fond of.

ONE EXCEPTION TO SELF-explanation is "Rico Apollo." As I was working on it I was reminded of the music we used to play for amateur nights at the Apollo Theater on 125th Street in Harlem. I played there with Charlie Parker, Georgie Auld, Dinah Washington, Stan Getz, and Chubby Jackson, among others. Rico was the head stagehand at the theater, and on Tuesdays at midnight he was very busy. He impersonated a kind of witch-doctor character in a grass skirt and battered top hat who danced onto the stage all benevolence when a contestant was good - a kind escort from the stage into the wings. But if the contestant was truly awful he'd bound onto the stage blowing his policeman's whistle, firing his blank pistol, and, to the accompaniment of appropriately demonic music, pull his hapless victim off stage with his giant shepherd's hook! I had a great time with Rico and the backstage crew, and I also have many fond memories of the acts I played with, such as Willie Bryant, Redd Foxx, Stump and Stumpy, Dusty Fletcher, and the Nicholas Brothers. We all worked very hard there - sometimes doing as many as six shows a day!

SO HERE.'S THE PRESENT quartet: Richie De Rosa on drums (ten years with me), Dean Johnson on bass (five years with me), and Bill Charlap, piano (two years with me), recorded at the Carriage House in Stamford, Connecticut, and I hope it finds its way around the world, from Los Angeles to Tokyo, Brisbane to Buenos Aires, Vancouver to Tel Aviv and points between. ~ GERRY MULLIGAN, April 24, 1990

Chet Baker recorded at every opportunity during the last decade or so of his tragic life, with widely varying results due to his drug addiction. But this surprising duo session with pianist Paul Bley is one of his better efforts from this period, focusing primarily on standard ballads by top composers. Bley's playing in the mid-'80s usually was freer in nature, but he willingly plays more mainstream backing for the trumpeter. Baker's tone adds to the poignant air in a rather deliberate interpretation of "If I Should Lose You," with Bley playing beautiful, sparse chords behind him. The duo gels nicely in a midtempo setting of Sonny Rollins' "Pent-Up House," while Baker's "Skidadidlin'" is a low key, bluesy number. Baker sings "You Go to My Head" in a thoughtful manner. First issued on LP, the CD edition added a warm extended performance of Richard Rodgers' "Little Girl Blue" that obviously was omitted at first only due to time restrictions.
