Occupying just over a third of an hour “Satin Doll” follows the same general template with minor deviations and includes another priceless Pedersen improvisation. “Round About Midnight” finds the band starting to gel in earnest and contains the finest playing by Poindexter of the date as he adjusts to the smoky ballad tempo of the piece. The tempered work of the rest of the band is gorgeously on target too, Ntshoko whose minimalist brushes add just the right amount of diaphanous texture. Gordon’s sensuous baritone inaugurates all but the title number with sultry spoken prefaces to further seduce the crowd. “Sonnymoon For Two” is present only as a maddeningly abbreviated half- minute taste, those misguided Danmarks engineers possibly fading out for what might have been station identification. Then again, beggars can’t be choosers as they say. And when it comes to recorded work Gordon’s certainly falls under the header “Finite Supply”.

This edition of the Aurex Jazz Festival series comes from a group of concerts recorded in Japan during September 1980, featuring Dizzy Gillespie, a trio of tenor saxophonists (Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Harold Land, and Illinois Jacquet), and an outstanding rhythm section consisting of Cedar Walton, Eddie Gomez, and Shelly Manne, with the addition of vibraphonist Cal Tjader on some tracks. The album title Battle of the Horns is somewhat misleading, as this isn't a Jazz at the Philharmonic-type concert with the four horns trading licks, but mostly individual highlights spotlighting one artist at a time.

The opening cut features Dizzy and the rhythm section on yet another exciting take of his landmark composition "A Night in Tunisia"; his chops also hold up very well on his timeless ballad "Con Alma." Land's feature is "The Peacemaker," an original that is enjoyable though not very memorable. Davis is more impressive with his interpretation of "I Can't Get Started," weaving in and out of Walton's exquisite accompaniment. Tjader and the rhythm section go it alone on a waltzing "Tangerine," then the vibes player drops out as Walton takes center stage for a strutting rendition of John Lewis' "Django." It is only on the final track, a rousing "Lover, Come Back to Me," that all eight musicians are heard together.

Like other releases by Eastwind in the Aurex Jazz Festival series, the sound quality is first-rate, though the liner notes are indecipherable unless the listener is fluent in Japanese. This out of print LP will be somewhat challenging to locate but worth the search. Ken Dryden

Mary Lou Williams emerged in the early '70s after a long period in which she worked in the Catholic church to resume her always-stimulating career as a jazz pianist. On this CD reissue, one of her finest recordings of her later years has been brought back and augmented by two previously unissued performances. Williams performs in duos and trios with bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Mickey Roker, uses Zita Carno on second piano during a couple of the more avant-garde pieces, and also performs some trios with bassist Milton Suggs and Tony Waters on congas. Rather than sounding like a veteran of the 1920s, Mary Lou Williams sounds 40 years younger, shows the influence of McCoy Tyner and hints at free jazz in spots. Great live material from one of the most important pairings in modern jazz -- recorded during the last months that John Coltrane was working with the Miles Davis Quintet! Davis and Coltrane are working here on a live date from Copenhagen in March of 1960 -- playing on 3 long tunes that really let both players open up and unfold in their own unique solo explorations. Titles are all familiar ones from the Davis book -- "So What", "All Blues", and "On Green Dolphin Street" -- but the extended renditions offer more than a few surprises that make them well worth having. Plus, added to these is one more additional track from 1963 -- featuring George Coleman on tenor instead of Coltrane, plus Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams -- playing "Milestones" on a live date in Juan-les-Pins.
