Superstar collaborations often look good on paper but don't pan out in reality, so it's a real pleasure to see that the pairing of two modern legends—keyboardist Chick Corea and guitarist John McLaughlin—is far more than some marketing representative's wet dream. Teaming with three younger players who add their own cachet—saxophonist Kenny Garrett, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta—Five Peace Band Live captures the group on the first leg of a nearly year-long tour, hot on the heels of Corea's much-lauded Return to Forever reunion, documented on Returns (Eagle Records, 2009). While FPB Live isn't as pedal-to-the metal fusion as Returns, there's no shortage of high-octane playing, as the quintet works through a number of originals, a couple of standards and a fine tribute to Miles Davis, who brought Corea and McLaughlin together for the first time 30 years ago on In a Silent Way (Columbia, 1969).

Ray Brown's bass just DOMINATES this set, and Basie never sounded better on the piano or organ then in this trio setting. Louis Bellson is great too, swinging with brushes and cymbals. But anyone even remotely a fan of Ray Brown should snap this up right now!

The session took place after the European tour, so we were used to playing together. We arrived at the Poste Parisien around ten, Jeanne Moreau was there, and we had a drink together.

Miles was very relaxed, as if the music he was playing wasn't that important. It was only later that I leaned he'd already been to a screening, and that he'd known about the project for several weeks. So he knew exactly what he wanted, and he also knew what he wanted from us, which is very much to his credit.

What was typical of this session was the absence of a specific theme. This was new for the period, especially with the soundtrack for a film

Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on December 7, 8 & 22, 1965. Originally released on Verve (8642). Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews. In his liner notes, Orrin Keepnews, Wes Montgomery's first producer and former boss at the Riverside label states that it was arranger Oliver Nelson's goal with GOIN' OUT OF MY HEAD to present Montgomery's guitar as a melody instrument, rather than as a soloist. This certainly happens on the ballads that make up at least half this set. It's probably just as well that doing so finally sold some records and gave the guitar-playing father of six a more solid income for the last few years of his life. However, most Montgomery aficionados still usually just want to hear him blow. And there's some solid jazz to be found here. Not surprisingly, it happens the most on the Montgomery originals "Boss City," Naptown Blues," and "Twisted Blues," but Montgomery also gets into it for real with the rhythm section on "Chim Chim Cheree"; after the orchestrations are over, he careens off Grady Tate's insistent drumming with exuberance and abandon.
