A superb goal from 17-year-old winger Paul Anderson gave Liverpool Reserves a deserved 1-0 win over 10 man Sunderland on a freezing night at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground. There was a new face in goal for Liverpool as the Reds fielded trialist and England Under-19 goalkeeper David Martin. He currently plays for MK Dons and is the son of former West Ham and England centre half Alvin Martin. In all honesty Martin didn't have anything to do, but that was largely down to the performances of centre halves Miki Roque and Godwin Antwi. Both were solid as a rock and nothing got past them.
Welsh Under-21 striker Ramon Calliste had a goal disallowed for off-side when he touched home Anderson's cross on the goal-line, so Liverpool had to settle for the 1-0 victory.
Liverpool Reserves: Martin, Barragan, Raven, Roque, Antwi, Hobbs, Peltier (Hammill 57), Potter, Calliste (Frayne 75), Mannix, Anderson.
Subs not used: Smith, Willis, Holmes.
Stephen Warnock has today dismissed wild newspaper speculation that he wants to quit Liverpool.
A "wicked whisper" in one tabloid over the weekend suggested Warnock was unhappy at not being a regular in the first team plans this season and was considering a move to Everton.
But the Liverpool defender insists nothing could be further from the truth after showing his committment to the club by signing a new contract in the summer.
He told Liverpoolfc.tv: "If I wasn't happy here then I wouldn't have signed a new contract. It's as simple as that.
"The story said that I wasn't happy at Liverpool and that I was going to speak with David Moyes about going to Everton. It's just not true.
"When I go home from training I don't tend to talk about my situation with my friends. When I go out I want to socialise and I definitely wouldn't talk about wanting to leave, even if it was the case. To be honest, I feel sorry for the person who said I was unhappy. It's quite sad really.
"Of course I'm never happy when I'm not in the team but that's just a personal opinion and it doesn't mean I want to leave. I imagine every player is the same.
"This season has been a good one for me and I feel like I have kicked on from last year. I broke through into the team last season but then I didn't do myself justice and that disappointed me. I worked hard in the summer to get to the level I wanted to be at and now I feel I'm doing okay."
Rafael Benitez is hoping Harry Kewell's injury problems will soon be behind him and back to the form that once made him one of football's hottest properties.Benitez said Kewell has impressed in training and believes he can make a big difference to the Liverpool team and be a key player for the Reds.
Benitez said: ""He played well the other day. Now I hope we can see him training every day and playing more games in a row.
"If he plays every week for the next two or three months and continues working, I am sure we will see a very, very good player. He can score goals, make key passes and make the difference in games.
