Football Italia rounds up the winners and the losers from Week 23 of the Serie A season
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The winners…
Adriano (Inter)
There’s no stopping Adriano now. After putting his 288-day goal drought behind him, the Brazilian is making a significant contribution to his side’s title stroll. He not only opened the scoring after just 45 seconds at Chievo with a wonder goal, but he again put himself at the full disposal of the team.
Rolando Bianchi (Reggina)
Two more goals against Torino on Sunday underlined just how good a player Rolando Bianchi really is. Touted as a prodigal talent while in the Atalanta youth system, talk that he is the new Alberto Gilardino may not be that wide of the mark. Kept a cool head to slot home his first, while he lashed in his brace with a precise, powerful drive from the edge of the area.
Francesco Totti (Roma)
There was another Totti show at the Olimpico against Parma. The Giallorossi captain inspired his colleagues with some quite wonderful vision and a performance of the highest standard. He should get an Italy call for next month’s Scotland test, but will he respond?
The losers…
Vincenzo Sicignano (Chievo)
The former Lecce ‘keeper had a nightmare against Inter at the empty Bentegodi. The Chievo No 1 was caught out by Adriano’s decision to shoot from an unlikely angle, while he was clearly at fault when Hernan Crespo’s strike sneaked under his diving hands.
Fernando Couto (Parma)
Fernando Couto’s crime on Sunday was that he didn’t let his football do the talking. After a fine defensive display against numerous Roma bombardments, the Portuguese veteran got himself booked and then sent-off for an utterly useless verbal exchange with the referee. His struggling outfit need him in the team, not in the stands.
Andrea Pirlo (Milan)
He’s probably Italy’s most technically gifted footballer, a player of sublime vision and awareness. However, the World Cup winner is significantly struggling to prove that. Milan’s sluggish attacking movement needs some injection from his brain and feet.
The goals…
Adriano (Inter)
The first goal of the day was also the best as Adriano rippled the net in some style. His audacity to shoot from the left edge of the penalty area, while running towards the corner flag, was rewarded with a strike of epic proportions. You would struggle to recreate it on the PlayStation…
Marek Jankulovski (Milan)
Milan netted the three points against Livorno thanks to a Marek Jankulovski blockbuster. His vicious long-range missile gave Marco Amelia no chance as it rocketed between his hand and the post.
Andrea Capone (Cagliari)
There must be something magic in that Cagliari No 10 shirt as Andrea Capone scored with a free-kick that Gianfranco Zola would have been proud of. The attacking midfielder effortlessly curled it over the Siena wall and it beat Alex Manninger after kissing the inside of the post.
The numbers…
Fifteen to one
Inter’s win at Chievo saw them collect their 15th straight League victory, which allowed them to equal the tally set by Real Madrid [1960-61] and Bayern Munich [2004-05 and 2005-06]. Their 60 points in 22 games is also the best ever seen in Italy as it is superior to the 59 collected by Juventus in 2005-06.
Milan march
Milan’s win against Livorno means they have now gone 11 games without defeat with six wins and five draws. They are now just two points shy of a Champions League spot after collecting 13 points from their last five games.
Rol call
Rolando Bianchi has entered the Reggina record books by becoming their most lethal scorer in a top-flight season. His brace at Torino saw him move on to 12 goals this term, whereas Mohammed Kallon [1999-00] and Nicola Amoruso [2005-06] netted 11 each in a single campaign.
