Parma and Lazio will both need to pick up three points at the Stadio Ennio Tardini if they are to go into the winter break in the kind of position the fans will be expecting of them. Of course, there can only be one winner, which should make for a tense encounter when the two sides come face to face this weekend.
Parma currently find themselves stuck in the relegation zone, but are just two points behind Chievo and the border of safety. While a relegation struggle is a very different proposal from the glory days of the 90s, their youngsters have started to show recently that they are well adapted to their current situation.
But while they may be picking up points one at a time, they have not won for eight games. Unless they can begin killing off their opponents, especially in games like this where they have the home advantage, they could find themselves in big trouble come the second half of the season. However, the absence of playmaker Domenico Morfeo could be a problem along with the injury to Giuseppe Cardone and suspension of Andrea Pisanu.
Lazio have shot up the table and are now only one point away from the Champions League qualification places. That crucial top four finish would be a huge boost to the financially crippled Roman club, and Coach Delio Rossi will be going all out to reach one of the top positions in time for Christmas.
Unfortunately for the Biancocelesti, the confidence boost from the 3-0 win in the Rome derby seems to have been erased already by the comfortable manner in which Inter disposed of them on Wednesday night. The suspension of Gaby Mudingayi and Emilson Cribari will also worry the Coach, with Fabio Firmani and Guglielmo Stendardo likely to take their places.
Man on fire: Goran Pandev (Lazio) – The Macedonian may have drawn a blank against Inter, but with his record of a goal every other game he will be eager to get on the scoresheet once again in this match.
