Cannavaro Jr thanks Napoli Sunday 14 October, 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Paolo Cannavaro – brother of Italy captain Fabio – has dedicated his first Azzurri call-up to hometown club Napoli.
Cannavaro junior has been included in the squad for Wednesday’s friendly against South Africa and he’s been quick to share his joy with the Neapolitan faithful.
“This call-up is even more satisfying for me because it comes while I have been playing for my beloved club side,” stated the former Under-21 international.
“This is very rewarding for me and I would like to share this present with all the fans and the whole of Naples.
“Today is a very special day because I am fulfilling a dream which I have wanted for some time.”
Although Paolo won’t get the chance to play alongside his brother, who has been left out of the squad by Roberto Donadoni, he’s still delighted with his inclusion for the Siena tie.
“It’s a sensational feeling to be included,” he added. “You do sometimes think about the national side, but you feel an indescribable joy when it does actually arrive.
“I want to thank the club, President Aurelio De Laurentiis, director general Pierpaolo Marino and everyone who has ever believed in me.
“They had faith in my abilities and gave me the possibility to wear the club shirt of my home city.”
Cannavaro, who helped Napoli to Serie A promotion last term, has some way to go if he wants to mirror the Azzurri career of his brother.
Fabio has won 111 caps to date, lifted the World Cup as captain and went within seconds of winning the 2000 European Championships.
Dossena: I don’t believe it! Sunday 14 October, 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Udinese defender Andrea Dossena has spoken of his shock after he was called up to the Italian national squad.
The 1981-born stopper has been included in the Azzurri set-up for the first time and he admits it has come as a major surprise.
“I didn’t think there was any truth in it,” the Bianconeri full-back commented ahead of Wednesday’s friendly against South Africa.
“I was told on Saturday afternoon that I may be included, but I didn’t really believe it at first. Then the official call arrived and it was great. This is a beautiful and pleasing surprise for me.”
Dossena is the latest left-back to be tested by Italy boss Roberto Donadoni and he’s keen to leave an impression.
“The Coach has tried out a few in that position like Giorgio Chiellini, Max Tonetto and Manuel Pasqual. I have now been given an opportunity which I don’t want to waste.”
Dossena, who spent eight seasons with Verona before a year at Treviso, is enjoying the best spell of his career seeing as he also recently signed a contract extension until 2012.
“This is a great period where many important things are happening to me,” said the man who Udinese signed in 2006.
“I’m happy to have penned a new contract in Udine and I must also thank the club if I have today been included in the Italian national squad.”
