Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Gentlemen
May I ask you to pay attention to
one of the recent negative trends in the game's development
Notably, catastrophic lack of drop-goals -
shortage not only of its attempts but total inabilty of
several world-class teams to follow old, trusted routine and set a drop-kick
We all would agree that variety is one of rugby's best features
I mean variety in size, weight, ability, tactics, skills, methods of scoring etc etc
Hence, gradual extermination of drop-goal will make rugby poorer in various ways
Drop-goal is a smart ploy. It is cheeky, nice to watch, not as easy to perform as pot-shots
Alas, when chasing that elusive try, teams often neglect drop-kick option -
cause they still hope getting penalty as a result of
endless, multi-phase, too predictable, boring sequence and
it would be worth the same 3 pts
This should be discouraged. Let's make teams think quick - why to spend so much energy on
hit-ups and risk knock-ons when we could attempt a drop-goal
To encourage this and make the option attractive we should increase drop-goal's value by a point:
From open play, including during advantage - to 4 pts,
and while converting a try - to 3 pts
This will save time - as in sevens, make the game less predictable and enhance its entertaining value
It would be fair as well for drop-goal kicker gets more reward for his superior skills
I see my suggestion is not without weak points but
I think it deserves to be trialled at least - where and when it's up to you to decide
Hence, I'll looking for your favourable response and decisive actions
Yours in rugby
