Irakli Parjiani, one of the leading Georgian artists of the Soviet-Russian Non-Conformism. His works are an unique combination of Non-Conformism with traditional Georgian art. Recognized as one of the greatest Georgian artists of the 20th century and represented in many museums and private collections. Museum’s Quality Collection
All works in this collection were created in Summer 1989 in West Berlin, Germany during the preparation of the exhibition sponsored by the “Berliner Sparkasse” Corporation in Mai-June 1990. They represent the most interesting period in his oeuvre.
During the 1980s West Berlin was one of the most vital art metropolis’ of Western Europe. Parjiani's works created in Germany represent his ability to adapt new impulses without loosing his own ‘Georgian’ style. However, the works in this collection were considered by the artist as preparation sketches and were not exhibited. In fall 1989 Irakli’s work in Berlin was interrupted due to the worsening of his health condition. His death at the age of 41 followed two years later. The “Berlin Period” represents the climax of his art.
Irakli Parjiani (1950-1991) is considered as one of the greatest Georgian artists of the Twentieth Century. He is Lariat of “National Award of Georgia” and “Pirosmani Award”. His artworks are in following collections:
Georgian State Museum, Tbilisi
Georgian National Gallery, Tbilisi
Museum of Oriental Art, Moscow, Russia
Tretiakov Gallery, Moscow
Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, Russia
and in many private collections
“Irakli Parjiani is one of the most important painters among the Soviet artists of 1980s. Despite the fact, that he belongs to the generation of Stalin-era artists which lived in isolation from the modern western art and were hindered in the artistic development; Irakli was able to get information about the different movements of the contemporary western art. …
He kept without any compromise his personal artistic style, risking political troubles with the authorities. He never painted to satisfy the taste of the art-officials… He finished the Art Academy in 1974, but did not received his Diploma until 1976, because the professors were not satisfied with his “not-realistic enough” paintings….
Parjiani doesn’t belong to any art movement of the 1980s. Already in 1978, in the era, when the religious pictures were forbidden, he started to work on the New Testament, creating a handwritten text of St. John and St. Mark illuminated with his own illustrations. His illustrations were influenced by the medievаl miniature illuminations. His next goal was to transform miniature illustrations into monumental paintings…
Parjiani’s art represents a harmonic world in which the ancient archaic spirit is combined with monumentality of medievаl painting and expressive tension. The world of this artist is complicated and rich….
“I paint for myself”, says the artist. “My pictures have to find the way to the people on their own. Berlin gave me new impulse to work. I work in new media, in acrylic, which somehow combines the effects of my earlier media. I feel to have much more freedom, like all of my wishes came true. Now I can realize all my ideas, which I carried for a long time. I have to work”…
(by Irina Popiaschwilli, Art Expert at the Art Academy, Tbilisi; excerpts from the exhibition catalog, Berlin 1990) ; which is included in this lot.
Irakli made himself a wax-paint and wax-pencils by melting wax with pigments in the pan on the stove. These ‘self-made’ wax-paints look like pastel, have pastel like intensive colors and pastel-texture. The difference is, that pastel must be varnished in order to preserve it, while the Irakli-made wax-paint preserves itself on the surface on the picture.

The monumental Bible paintings of Irakli Parjiani represent one of the greatest achievements of Georgian art in Twentieth Century. The first monumental (39” x 28”!!) sketches on package paper represent the development from miniature to monumental style. They are probably the most interesting part of this collection.
The buyer will receive the written confirmation of my ownership, the history of the artworks in my possession and original catalog of Irakli Parjiani’s Exhibition in West Berlin in 1990; where I had the pleasure to meet this very talented artist.
I was not able to find any of his paintings up for sale, most of his art work is sold out and many of his paintings are now exhibited in Museums and private collections around the world.
A very interesting and unique collection for very low price.
