134d1–e8. —Next, again, will God, having knowledge itself, be able to know the things with us? —Why not? —Because, answered Parmenides, it has been agreed with us, Socrates, that neither do those forms have in relation to the things with us the capability that they have, nor do the things with us in relation to those, but each in relation to itself. —It has been agreed. —Now, if this strictest mastership and this strictest knowledge is with the god, neither would their mastership ever govern us, nor would their knowledge know us nor anything else of the things with us, but, just as we do not rule them with the rule that is with us, nor do we know anything of the divine with our knowledge, so, again, by the same reasoning, neither are they our masters, nor do they, being gods, know things human.
The essence of the universe, at first concealed and closed-off, does not have the power to offer resistance to the courage of cognition; it must open itself up before him and lay its abundance and depth before his eyes and for his pleasure.
