it is probably for this reason that Baybars sent secret envoys (qussàd) to a “king of Georgia”, whose name is not specified, sometime before the death of Hülegü in 663/1265. 77 It is not possible to say to which of the two Davids this mission went. After the envoys had received gifts from the Georgian king, they were, however, stranded on their return near Tripolis and were sent to the Ilkhan by the Christian prince of Antioch.78 For Rama∂àn 663/May-June 1265, a Georgian mission returned the visit for the first time. However, the only report we have is that it presented Baybars with the usual gifts, whereupon he sent the
envoys back with gifts of his own.79 For Ra<ab 666/March-April 1268, Ibn 'Abd al-¸àhir reports in somewhat greater detail in his biography of Baybars that a mission of envoys returned from Georgia. 80 The envoys, termed rasùl in his text—which indicates a more official level of exchange than previously—brought two letters of the “kings of Georgia”, one from the “King of Abkhazia”,81 the other from “David, the king of Tiflis”. Baybars, it becomes obvious, had negotiated with both Georgian kingdoms. The letters consisted of statements to the effect that both kings had seceded from the Mongols because of the Mamluk sultan. The king of Abkhazia reported furthermore that he had joined forces with Berke as he had heard that he was a friend of Baybars
