Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti (12 May 1828 – 9 April 1882)

Beata Beatrix (Blessed Beatrice)
1863 (30 Kb); Tate Gallery, London
The death of Beatrice from The Divine Comedy by Dante. This painting also reflects Rossetti's greif after the death of his wife, Elisabeth Siddal, the model for Beatrice, painted from memory after her death.
This painting, depicting her moment of overdose, was done after she had already died. The strange anatomy and junked-out facial expression are testament to this. The red dove holding the poppy flower is a direct reference to the peace brought about by opium.

"A Year and a Day"
.."I lie among the tall green grass
That bends above my head
And covers up my wasted face
And folds me in its bed
Tenderly and lovingly
Like grass above the dead.
________________
Dim phantoms of an unknown ill
Float through my tired brain;
The unformed visions of my life
Pass by in ghostly train;
Some pause to touch me on the cheek,
Some scatter tears like rain.
--------------
..A silence falls upon my heart
And hushes all its pain.
I stretch my hands in the long grass
And fall to sleep again,
There to lie empty of all love
Like beaten corn of grain."
