It’s 1945 and WWII has ended. Germany starts to slowly rebuild out of what was left from the bombed out cities. The Occupational Forces restricted passenger car manufacturing to a 4-cylinder engine and Mercedes Benz started where they left off in 1939 with their 4-cylinder 170V model.
1951 manufacturing rules were relaxed and Mercedes Benz showed the world their model 220 W187; a 6-cylinder car with a lot of design features including an overhead valve engine with overhead cam, one shot lube system (where you press the hydraulic lube piston every 600 KM and pronto the car was ‘lubed’ again – all the ball joints and drive-shaft points).
General Information:
The W187 was Mercedes-Benz's line of six-cylinder luxury cars in the early-1950s. It was sold as a sedan, coupe, and cabriolet, all with the 220 model name. Introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1951, the 220 sedan was replaced by the W105/W180 line in 1953. The coupe and cabriolet lasted until August 1955.
All 220s used a 2.2 L (2195 cc/133 in³) straight-6 engine producing 80 hp DIN (86 SAE) (60 kW). The styling was similar to the 170 S except that the headlights were integrated into the fenders for a slightly more modern look. Two different cabriolet models were built, but they only sold 1,278 and 997 for the "A" (two-door) and "B" (four-door) versions, respectively.
The saloon went out of production in May, 1954; the Cabriolet models soldiered on for another 15 months, now equipped with the new W180 220a's engine. Also, a Cabriolet A-based Coupé became available at that time.
