Peugeot and Pininfarina have been working together since 1951 when Peugeot decided to call in an independent design house to create its new 403 Saloon.
Peugeot was seeking a distinctive lasting look of its own and it was no accident that it opted for Pininfarina, a design house with an established international reputation for a style that combined classicism, inventiveness and personality.
The new Peugeot saloon which came out in 1955 was a bigger success than the French firm had ever dreamed of, in the end over a milion units were produced, an unimaginable figure for the period.
Well before inter-company collaboration had become the European fashion. Peugeot and Pininfarina had established a partnership that is highly unusual in the automotive world.
And it still goes on. Initially confined to design, it was in the Sixties that the relationship was extended to manufacturing and Pinifarina had established a partnership that is highly unusual in the automotive world and produced its first complete cars for the French company.
They were niche cars, coupés and cabriolets. Pininfarina produced the bodies which were them sent to Peugeot where the mechanical parts were assembled. A series of numbers and successes followed 404-204-504-205 and 306 to which we must now add the latest, the 406 Coupé.
This marks a turningpoint in the Peugeot Pininfarina partnership, because, for the first time, in addition to styling and design, the French company has entrusted Pininfarina with responsability for manufacturing the complete vehicle, including, assembly of the mechanical parts, and testing. This publications aims to summarise, in a series of photographs from the Pininfarina and Peugeot archives, the enormous amount of work done in almost 50 years which has had a lasting effect on the life of the two companies.
Tradition and prestige
This partnership has acquired a new dimension with the 406 Coupé project . For the very first time Peugeot has entrusted Pininfarina with the responsability not only for the exterior and interior styling , but also for industrialisation and production in strict resect for the standards, particularly quality, that are a part of everyday life in Peugeot's own manufacturing facilities.
The effect of this increased responsibility has been to stimulate the already fertile inventiveness of Pininfarina designers to create a car which is capable of arousing emotions that can only be the fruit of artistic expression.
Pininfarina also realized numerous models and research prototypes on Peugeot mechanic base.
The design of the 406 Coupé
In the closing years of this millennium it is often easy to fall prey to insipid, immoobile “rétro” tendencies, so it is important to propose reassuring volumes, that are serious and formal rather than ephemeral, of a very high quality and with a timeless beauty, that will not decay rapidly.
The decision to maintain the same wheelbase as the other 406s (2.70m) has produced an elegant, dynamic, coupé, with a sporting image but a spaciousness comparable with that of the saloon.
Pininfarina Studi e Ricerche started the styling phase in June 1992, with a number of renderings of cars that differed in their general set-up and the shape of their sides. The first two full sized models were produced very rapidly (September 1992) for an initial verification: one already hinted at the final result, the other proposed tauter lines. Two painted, more envolved plastic models followed, and one of these was extremely close to the final result. It already gave a glimpse of what the sides, the volumes and the recessed rear window would look like. A final mock-up appeared in April 1993, which was almost identical to the final reference model of January 1995.
In the plan view, the delicate of the shape is created by a front overhang that was deliberately extended so that, with a slightly shorter rear overhang and in the lower cabin, the third box which contains the luggage compartment remains light.
On both sides the rubbing strip is deliberately shorter than the side, to maintain the sense of continuity between the upper and lower parts of the car. This continuity is maintained between all the surfaces of the bodywork, whose softly modulated shapes are extremely sensitive to colour. Every detail, like the grille and the surrounding area, or the lower part of the bodyshell, help to convey a balance between the roundness and the tension of the forms, producing a smooth car, with a personality of its own.
There is a resemblance to the 504 Coupé, another coupé created by Pininfarina for Peugeot. It is evident in the side dihedron, in the line of the wings which repeat it, and the recessed, straight rear window with a laterally inclined upright, that emphasises the third bow of the car. These and other details are a visual impression that hark back to Peugeot coupés of the past, and foster a natural sense of brand identity.
Inside, the environment is welcoming and sporty, but obviously different from that of the other 406s. In addition to the new steering wheel and the gear lever knob that combines leather and metal, we find facia elements that have been deliberately retained.
The upholstery of the doors and panelling matches that of the seats. These are four visibly separate armchairs that convey both a sporty temperament and exceptional comfort. The choice of materials and the colours of the interior naturally draw attention to all the individual components equally, by enhancing them.
4 06 Coupé Development
The importance that Peugeot attributes to its return to the coupé is underlined by the fact that the new model, although originating from the 406 family, was conceived and designed as a completely new car.
And in fact the 406 Coupé only shares with the 406 Saloon the floorpan, mechanical and the range-tooping engine.
In addition to a specific one, and a few interior components, though modified and personalized.
This has meant that as the new model shared no body part with the 406 Saloon, it required specific investments in design, testing and industrialisation.
Industrie Pininfarina's global responsibility in the subsequent construction of the vehicle and the intrinsic difficulties of an extremely ambitious styling, technical and qualitative project, required an extra effort in the search for technical and manufacturing solutions to reflect the absolute priority without a compromise with the complexity of the strong, distinctive styling elements, typical of a top-of range niche model.
From 1993 the development phase of the Coupé brought Industrie Pininfarina and Peugeot into close, open cooperation and team spirit was high: a specific project team, representing all the Company functions involved in the development of the new product (design, testing, methods, quality, logistics, purchasing, costs, marketing, etc.) was set up at Pininfarina, adopting the Project Management Methodologies.
During construction and testing of the prototypes and the industrialisation phase, numerous problems posed by the complex shape and content of the car, were tackled and solved, sometimes with results that exceeded objectives.
Among the most demanding car components let's include the particular shape of the large doors without upper frames. But also, the shape, recess and silkscreening of the rear window, the large front bonnet and its opening mechanism, the polycarbonate bumpers that withstand deformation and small bumps, the special movement of the windows which descend automatically, when the doors are opened for functional reasons, and are locked to safeguard passengers in a danger situation, the rear quarterlights, the complex surface of the rear boot cover, the hinge system of the rational “parallelogram” opening mechanism on the luggage compartment, and the elliptical headlamps.
In any case the bodyshell in its whole is the strong, distinguishing feature of this car; it combines excellent performance and roadholding with very high levels of safety.
In particular we must underline the great attention that was paid to this last factor, which is expressed at the very highest levels in the 406 Coupé, in terms of both the structural levels in the 406 Coupé, in terms of both the structural characteristics of the body (which has a differentiated resistance with an excellent torsional rigidity coefficient, uprights protected from side-on impact, doors with impact beams and reinforced with an additional side-impact protection system), and of the safety features of the cabin ( steering wheel with collapsible steering column, pretensioned, adjustable seat belts, airbags for driver and passenger, advanced anti -pinch window closing sustem, luggage restraint system).
The car's aero-acustic comfort level is particularly high, thanks to accurate research sessions in the Pininfarina Wind Tunnel, directed both at reducing external sources of noise and at the optimal design of the sealing system, thus minimising acoustic infiltrations.
For the interior too, the design set out to achieve the highest possible quality expectations of customers of a “coupé plaisir” with four proper seats that are comfortable and welcoming, and a very generous luggage compartment.
406 Coupé The production
The manufacturing process of the Peugeot 406 Coupé includes assembly,body-in white finishing and painting processes, which are performed in the Grugliasco plants; trimming and assembly of the mechanical parts with subsequent testing of 100%of production on Pininfarina's own test track (and on the road) at its San Giorgio Canaveseplant.
Pininfarina has taken deep care of the quality of the manufacturing process, both through the use-more extensive than is usual for a niche car- of advanced technologies in the body-inwhite operations (robotized dimensional checks on 100% of bodyshells in production) and painting, and by the detailed manual and artisan skills of teams involved in the delicate stage of trimming and finishing.
To conclude, the characteristics of the car as a whole are in line with parameters at the peak off the motor industry, and they ensure that it responds in full to the expectations of a prestigious luxury niche model like the Peugeot 406 Coupé.
Starting May 2003 the 406 Coupé is available in a new version that, while still remaining true to its original proportions and balanced styling, introduces a number of new design features. Pininfarina has created a newly styled front-end to give it a pleasantly aggressive look, reinforced by the larger lower air intakes.
At either side of the air intakes, new, smaller, round, lenticular fog lights. Decorative features on the facia have a matt metallic finish, with the Pininfarina logo in bright black letters.
The instruments have this type of finish too, with a black border running around the instrument panel and air vents. Interior features are now even more elegant, from the black central console to leather trim on the side panels of the seats.
In June 2003 Pininfarina celebrated the 100 thousandth unit of the Peugeot 406 Coupé to come off the production line at its San Giorgio Canavese (Turin) plant."
