Scotland A 69 - Georgia 3: Shadow Scots power past limited Georgia
«
By DAVID FERGUSON
A HOST of internationalists and prospective caps reminded the Scotland coaches of their claims for a step-up with a performance bristling with power and adventure at a windswept Firhill last night.
Under Andy Robinson, Scotland A had beaten Italy A 37-15 and Ireland A 67-7 in the spring, and after reaching the Churchill Cup final in the summer the shadow squad returned to register a convincing victory over what proved to be a Georgia siADVERTISEMENTde some way short of their world ranking of 14th.
Kelly Brown made a real point in front of the watching Frank Hadden, Scotland's head coach, with a terrific all-action display at openside flanker, topped off by a superb try, duly earning the man-of-the-match award. Max Evans also capped a fine performance with a scintillating score, while Nikki Walker ate up countless yards in attack and scored. Mark McMillan and Gordon Ross were full of running at half-back, and the strength of the front row, Geoff Cross, Philip Fitzgerald and Ed Kalman, was manifest in countless scrum surges.
The Scots opened the scoring with slick, patient attacking inside the Georgia 22 which ended with Richie Vernon, the blindside flanker, bursting over the line. Otar Barkalaia, the Georgia full-back, opened the visitors' account with a penalty, but after 21 minutes Evans revealed his attacking prowess, taking a mis-pass on halfway from Ross, beating the first defender, stepping back inside from the next, sprinting clear and then showing the pace to beat the covering defender to the line.
McMillan grabbed the third and Brown the fourth within four minutes of each other, the scrum-half showing great determination to score while the flanker emulated Evans in using pace and power to beat first-up tacklers, and an audacious step-over to beat the last man. Rob Dewey then reminded Hadden he was still around, streaking away to a try after brilliant off-loading by Colin Gregor and Ross.
The Scots led 31-3 at half-time and a procession followed in the third quarter with tries for replacement Simon Webster, Walker and Andy Henderson. Scott Newlands added a ninth try, Henderson took it into double figures and Vernon finished the game as it had started with a final, 11th try, Gregor converting for a 69-3 victory.

Wouldn't read to much into this result, as most of the Georgian sqaud are 3rd choice players. Most of their main players where not released from their French clubs.
The team they had out where mainly picked from teams in Georgia in which they only have 2 leagues so I think it is a credit to them for getting a team together and keeping the score to what it is.Report Unsuitable2 AlastairS,15/11/2008 08:33:55
I would agree with Big Smoke. This was the worst International side I have ever seen in Scotland They were awful.Report Unsuitable3 Mutt,Close to the fence but not on it... 15/11/2008 08:46:07
Full Marks to Andy Robinson.
At the start of the game he walked past laughing as we shouted:
"He's fae Edinburgh! Boo!!"
As he came back past at half time he stopped to say:
"Isn't it great to see Glasgow scoring tries?"
The man is A Legend :>Report Unsuitable4 Venachar,15/11/2008 09:25:21
