Key battles in ENCGeorgia are the only side with a 100 percent record in the competition which spans two years, having topped 60 points against both Ukraine and Spain before edging a tight battle with Portugal 13-12 a fortnight ago.
The defending champions have an impressive ENC pedigree, having lost once since Spain beat them in March 2007. That one loss, though, 12 months ago this weekend, came at the hands of a Romanian side desperate to keep their RWC 2011 qualification hopes alive.
If Georgia can avenge that loss then they will climb above Canada into 14th spot, regardless of the margin of victory, with Romania staying put in 18th even if Russia and Portugal both enjoy emphatic victories away from home.
A Georgia loss will definitely drop them below USA, but if Romania can win by more than 15 points – something they have managed only once in 13 meetings – then the two sides will simply swap places with the Oaks assuming their highest position since late 2007.
Portugal are another nation for whom victory could herald a one-place rise to 19th if they match the winning margin of Russia over Division 1A newcomers Ukraine. If Russia were to win by more than 15 points and Portugal only scrape past Spain then the sides would remain in 19th and 20th respectively.
A third successive defeat by Portugal can only see Spain slide one to 24th, although for this to definitely happen Belgium must overcome Poland in their Division 1B encounter in Gdynia by more than 15 points. A smaller margin means that Spain must lose emphatically to Portugal for the sides to swap places.
