Plenty at stake in ENCDefending champions Georgia signalled their intentions to again retain their title by beating Division 1A newcomers Ukraine 62-3 last weekend and will be looking to follow that with another victory on home soil on Saturday, this time against Spain.
Georgia’s 17-9 victory in Tbilisi last February confirmed their place at Rugby World Cup 2011, but just as last weekend another win will not affect their ranking of 15th as they currently sit eight places and 10.18 rating points above Spain.
A Georgian loss, though, could see Richie Dixon’s men fall either two or three places and has the potential to result in Spain climbing two to 21st to equal their highest ever ranking, albeit only if they triumph in Tbilisi by more than 15 points. A smaller win and they will remain 23rd.
Russia are the only European Nations Cup side capable of climbing above a losing Georgia this weekend, providing they make the most of home advantage in Sochi to overcome a Portugal side buoyed by their opening 24-17 victory of Romania.
If Russia, who edged Spain 28-24 last weekend, beat Portugal then they will at least retain their 18th position, regardless of how Romania fair in the Ukraine. Likewise Portugal cannot slip from their new standing of 20th even with an emphatic loss in Sochi.
However, if Portugal can end a four-match losing streak against Russia and Ukraine cause a shock by beating Romania then a two place rise to 18th is possible, the highest position they have occupied since March 2006.
Lowest ever ranking for Romania?Romania will, if they lose and Portugal win, fall one place to 20th and their lowest ever position since the IRB World Rankings were introduced in October 2003. A Ukraine victory will lift them between three and five places, but defeat will drop them below Germany into 30th.
Romania, though, have never lost to the Ukraine, their most recent meetings coming last summer in the Rugby World Cup 2011 qualifying process, the Oaks running out 94-10 winners on aggregate over the legs en route to claiming the final place in New Zealand.
Preserving this perfect record will at best only improve their ranking to 18th if Russia also fall to Portugal, otherwise the sides will remain as they are.
The weekend’s other European Nations Cup encounter is the Division 1B affair between Belgium and Moldova in Brussels, two sides separated by nine places in the IRB World Rankings at 25th and 34th respectively.
With the winner set to move to the top of the standings, the potential gains on the rankings front are slightly different with one place the maximum Belgium can rise, unlike Moldova with a win paving the way to a climb of between four and eight places.
If Moldova were to win by more than 15 points then they would actually become the higher ranked of the two sides, with their hosts plummeting five or six places, depending on the outcome in Bucharest.
