Georgia have been the side to watch thus far, scoring 122 points and conceding just three in brushing aside the challenge of Ukraine and Spain in Tbilisi as they attempt to retain their grip on the European Nations Cup title.
However, with both wins coming over sides significantly below them they have had no impact on their ranking of 15th. That though is about to change as victory over Portugal will improve their rating and possibly also their position.
Georgia must win by more than 15 points if they are to climb above Canada in 14th, although they will be taking nothing for granted against a Portugal side that has already beat Romania and Russia, the two other sides in the European Nations Cup top tier bound for Rugby World Cup 2011.
These two victories have taken Portugal to 20th in the IRB World Rankings, a position they will not lose even with a heavy loss at home to Georgia. They could even climb to 19th if Romania lose by more than 15 points at home to Russia.
If Portugal can record a first victory over Georgia since 2005 then a climb of one or two places is possible, the latter taking them to their highest standing since early 2006. It would also condemn Georgia to a two-place fall to 17th with USA and Tonga the beneficiaries.
