The tourists landed some 40 hours before Loose Pass was written. Normally by now there’d have been welcoming functi0ns, opening press reviews, a few chats around the hotel foyers. This time it is as though the team has simply emigrated; we’re waiting for a postcard to feel relief that they’ve landed alright and found some decent digs.
While they were in the air, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa sent the country into a lockdown whereby the players will not even be able to pop out for a coffee, never mind hob-nob with the locals. Nor will they be able, officially, to get a beer and let off steam. The emptiness of the stadia is now a certainty, while it is likely, in the light of the spiralling numbers in Gauteng, that the entire tour will take place in Cape Town and Durban. Goodness only knows what Sky Sports will be putting on their 24-hour Lions channel, but it is unlikely to have much in the way of live footage.
The opposition has already been affected by the coronavirus; fortunately the outbreak has been contained, but it will serve as a warning that there can be not one leak in the bubbles surrounding either team over the next five weeks.
Caged up in hotels, released from them only to train or to play Test matches in front of rows of empty seats, surrounded by a populace wrought by worry and robbed of all the best aspects of touring, these Lions will find their resolve tested. Any pre-conceived dreams of Lions touring have gone.
