I love everything about England
Sweet Baby GirlThe 'Palæo' (old) - 'lithic' (stone) period, is the earliest, and currently longest, period of human development encapsulating all but 10,000 of the last 2 million years. The conclusion of the period coincides with the last major glaciation of Britain and the end of the Pleistocene Epoch.
This is the period of human development from a descendant species of ape through Homo Erectus and Neanderthals to a near human creature known as Homo Sapiens. Current research appears to indicate the Neanderthal was a separate species and although there may have been some cross-species interaction it does not represent one of our direct ancestors as modern mitochondrial DNA sequencing seems to confirm.
As a result of the near total glaciation of the British Isles archaeological evidence of Palæolithic culture in Britain is vary rare the oldest hominid finds dating back some 400,000 years however subsequent glaciations or 'Ice Ages' must have caused migration of human ancestors into and out of the area of what is now Britain even if we cannot find much evidence today. To help us classify this vast period it is divided into three sub-periods; Lower Palæolithic, Middle Palæolithic and Upper Palæolithic.
In order to throw more light on this vague period of British History a major new national project to study the Ancient Human Occupation of Britain has been instigated. As the project matures new information may become available
