Project Environment:
Junta de Freguesia de Linda-a-Velha is a local public body of the Portuguese government. The main activity is to serve the local community of Linda-a-Velha by solving the problems of the local residents. The Junta de Freguesia has different areas to serve the population: social area, information area, cleaning area, juridical support. The staff includes six administrative, three assistants that help in whatever necessary, from gardening to local construction, one driver, one cleaning woman, one lawyer, and one social worker.
Apart from the daily activities, we have been trying to develop some actions with and towards the local community. Our first collaboration was established with Santa Casa da Misericórdia which we develop activities with a kindergarten the “Palhaço”, and also with the City Hall of Oeiras .
The Junta de Freguesia de Linda-a-Velha also develops activities in the voluntary service with the Voluntary Bank of the Junta de Freguesia de Linda-a-Velha, by promoting several activities: teaching the Portuguese language to Immigrants; school support; training programmes to senior people and having domestic support.
We also try to promote our village and our local products through fairs, especially the very typical religious fair, the “Nossa Senhora do Cabo”t hat is held in September every year. These fairs are organised by us, inside the local community. We sell handmade products given by the local community.
Tasks for volunteer:
Promoting biological agriculture: in order to produce, prepare confectionery and commercialized jams, in the local fair held in September. The volunteer will have to know the techniques that will allow working in the gardening field. The volunteer will know how to prepare (digging) the ground for planting new products of the season and also to the harvest of some products such as potatoes, beans, cabbage, carrots. He/she will also have to ensure not only the treatment and cultivation of flowers in the “Quinta Pedagógica”, but also treating the existing flowers and planting new species of flowers: 30%;
Awareness the local community for the beauty of having a garden: create an audiovisual archive of old and traditional practices by showing how to do gardening through the plantation of different flowers and also to show the differences to have a beauty garden which can be use as an interest to catch the attention of the local community: 10%;
Recycling and reusing of materials: contribute with the help of local volunteers will ensure the production of natural fertilizer to be used in organic farming. Through the recycle of materials the volunteer will have to build not only scarecrows to be placed in gardening but also to do the recycling through the separation of waste in the eco point: 10%
Prepare and Promote environment workshops: helping to prepare and to participate in environment workshops. These environmental workshop’s will promote a environmental education awareness in local schools or in the local fair held in September through games, lectures:10%;
Fair support: the volunteer will help the Junta de Freguesia de Linda-a-Velha during the Fair held in September, presenting the products that were made during the year like jams and biologic products that were cultivated like potatoes, beans, cabbage, carrots: 10%
Media and Communications: the EVS volunteers will cooperate with media, social and civil journalism, schools, Daily Centre. The EVS volunteers will support the local volunteers by participating and writing articles related to the environment problems which will be published in local, regional newspapers or in school: 10%;
Promotion of EVS and other European Youth Opportunities: The EVS volunteers will promote a Cultural Exchange with the local community, in the local fair and in schools, by presenting their EVS project in exhibitions, conferences and lectures. In this way the EVS volunteers will stimulate the participation of more young people in EVS frame or other initiatives of YIA programme and will increase the chance of success and further existence of the project: 10%;
Personal Project: according to the spirit of volunteering, learning and sharing that sets the philosophy of hosting an EVS project, the volunteers involved in Junta de Freguesia de Linda-a-Velha will have the freedom and will be challenged to promote a personal project, an original idea or whatever they desire that comes in accordance with the regular philosophy of the institution, either in the formerly mentioned areas, or in different ones, for which they can count with support and monitoring of the Junta de Freguesia’s technical team:10%

We will look for volunteers who are interested in working with a commitment to volunteering, with interest in environment field, and had chosen our project because of the experience and development they will gain not only because it's in Portugal.
