HATEBREEDER
With Hatebreeder the band proves how fast they can play, the songs are shorter and got straighter song structures compared to Something Wild. The nine songs are all impressive and helped to make the name Children Of Bodom more popular in the Metal scene. With "Silent Night, Bodom Night" and "Downfall", which is nearly always played as last song on live gigs, the band has two immortal classics that will be also played in the future.
1. WARHEART
The opener of the second album starts with an intro speech ("From now on we are enemies...You and I") from the movie "Amadeus" which was spoken by F. Murray Abraham (in the role of Salieri) and after that follows a blastbeat attack and it's one of the fastest COB songs ever with a very impressive guitar solo. Was played live in 1999-2001 and also in 2004 and 2006.
2. SILENT NIGHT, BODOM NIGHT
A very famous COB tune, known for its hyperfast guitar and keyboard parts. It's a rather short song but it contains many great melodies with fast double bass and drum rolls. The lyrics, which are about the lake Bodom murders were written by Kimberly Goss. Was played live on almost every gig in 1999-2006 and in 2008.
3. HATEBREEDER
The title track starts in high speed but the second half of the song shows some neo classical parts with great guitar and keyboard solos. The mini-solo in it at 2:49 is note-for-note identical to one of the Soprano lines in Mozart's "Queen of the Night Aria", from "The Magic Flute". Was played in 1999-2001.
4. BED OF RAZORS
The song is a bit slowed down with beautiful melodies and Alexi wrote it for Kimberly Goss. Sinergy's "Razorblade Salvation" is related to "Bed Of Razors". Was played live in 1999-2001.
5. TOWARDS DEAD END
One of the most known COB songs ever. The band already played it in 1998 and since that time it was played on every show (with some little exceptions) until 2004. In 2006 the band did a mix of this song and "Chokehold" and later and in 2007 with "Children Of Decadence". The main melody was some years old and comes from the old Inearthed days (an acoustic version of it can be heard on Homeland II : Shining).
6. BLACK WIDOW
This song wasn't played live very often, only on some single shows in 1999 and 2000. The intro for it was taken from the movie "Miami Vice" and the riff which starts at 1:05 is taken from Mozart's Concerto N°20 in D minor (KV466). Kimberly Goss does a scream on this one at 1:45.
7. WRATH WITHIN
Wrath Within has a gloomy atmosphere and its pretty much drum dominated. Has a lot of energetic riffing and a solo duet. The only song from Hatebreeder that was never played live.
8. CHILDREN OF BODOM
The title song of the band contains everything which COB are known for. The shout similar to "Unripe Vengeance" can be heard in the Stone song "Sweet Dreams". The lyrics are once again about the lake Bodom murders. The band has played the song live in 1998-2003, 2005 and 2007.
9. DOWNFALL
The band used some of the keyboard and guitar melodies as an intro in 1998 and developed the song "Downfall" from it and even played it live in 1998. A video was shot for it and it fits the track very well with the depressing and suicidal lyrics. Downfall proved to be a perfect song to end many COB shows and the band tends to stop it right before the 2nd verse and leave the stage for a while to get the fans scream for more. The working title for it was originally "Harjunpää" and in 1998 it got the title "Forevermore". Was played live in 1998-2008.
