At 24 yrs of age Emilie Simon is a young and pretty girl. She writes the music and lyrics for her dazzling songs, even taking on the roles of producer, programmer, arranger: all usually words with masculine connotations in a recording studio’s glossary. As Emilie is not just any girl, she doesn’t appreciate preconceived ideas: and she doesn’t believe(as some do) that the audacity and inventiveness of music should only apply to women abroad. French women on the other hand, should be content with the eternal supporting role of ‘sound doll’, trained and manipulated behind the scenes by Pygmalion types with dubious intentions.

Emilie Simon is trying to change these all too common ideas, and does so with the powerful track Dйsert, the title of her autumn Maxi CD, which also introduces her first album.

It was in a recording studio – the mysterious belly of musical gestation that Emilie Simon spent most of her formative years. Her father, a sound engineer, had set up his own studio in the basement of their family home in the south of France, and Emilie never missed a chance to go and watch the visiting musicians - usually jazzmen, and would gaze in wonderment at the glowing ballet of LEDs and VU meters. All this had a deep effect on her. Sometimes her music-loving parents would take her to jazz clubs where she stayed up long past her bed time, lulled by lazy solos from sandmen with a difference, to finally fall asleep on her mother’s knee. Careers have been founded on less. Fifteen years later, Emilie is now a musician too, not to mention a singer-songwriter and sound engineer.

Emilie was very thorough in her musical training. Instead of rushing to pen various immature songs on a guitar or key board that would make her blush in later years, she preferred to build up her skills one by one, one step at a time, learning for example how to orchestrate string sections.

Insatiably curious, she also delved into the thorniest contemporary musical genres at the IRCAM (Acoustic/Musical research and coordination Institute) but finally set her heart on pop. At a time of pre-fabricated Pop stars, Emilie Simon offers us an unusual album where rebelling against rules is not premeditated, but purely demonstrates a burning desire to experience something new.

On the other hand as Emilie Simon’s first album is also full of light and welcoming pop songs, it has a very contradictory allure.

Although she is surrounded by a few well trusted musicians, Emilie took complete control of the album’ Dйsert ‘ as she wished to keep it as intimate and enclosed as possible.

She came up with the base material and took care of all the minute details in her very own home studio, which she only left when the pressing need for more space became apparent.

The 11 original compositions (to which the audacious yet amusing cover of the classic I wanna be your dog by The Stooges must be added) are all stamped with Emilie’s exclusive style.

She manipulates English and French with a special gift for finding the perfect musical articulations and resonances, which of course contribute greatly to the general flow of the songs.

Due to this, the album drifts like a dream: 40 minutes of a calming musical experience, which is only troubled by a few strange creaks, little pyrotechnical episodes that perturb the gentle flow here and there, millions of precise details that become clearer and more remarkable each time you hear them. Details that high quality mixing by the genius Markus Dravs, (who has worked with, among others, Bjork and Brian Eno) has brilliantly made shine through.

Her overly innocent, naturally sweet and sour voice, which resembles the disturbing chant of certain Nordic sirens (Stina Nordenstan above all) is submitted to all kinds of outrages, changed and twisted by her complex machines which she works on with a friend from IRCAM, Cyrille Brissot. One of the main strengths of this disc is that something is always going on. Even in the most seemingly innocent songs, a strange sound, hitch, change of tone or atmosphere is lurking.

For example it is a match being lit which brings the rhythm to Il pleut, the threat of an explosion that rises in Graines d’йtoiles’ in which Perry Blake’s voice, stormier than ever, is introduced. The alliterations, accompanied by the graceful harp in Lise, and the bare beauty of Chanson de toile close the curtain for this album.

There are so many different and changing atmospheres and tones, that it is impossible to count them all. After she won recognition on the French electro- pop scene with the single Dйsert , we have now been given access to all the unforeseeable and uneven topography of Emilie Simon’s Universe; a universe which we can never possibly finish exploring.

Suspicious Records is a sublabel of industrial label Hive Records. It was founded last year and have had 2 releases under their belt up until this point, but should be already known to all the beatfreaks and tripheads out there. Keeping true to their philosophy - dark cinematic urban music - so far they are very selective and consistent in the kind of music they let out to the world. Which is a good thing if you share the same sentiments on what a good music should be like. I know I do. Both previous releases - Leaf - Made Into Itself from last year, and this year's Saltillo - Ganglion - are highly recommended.
And here's the third one, hautingly beautiful, this time a compilation of tracks featuring less-known (but brilliant nonetheless) musicians from all over the map. Some tracks were already released a few years ago (like Clove's "Hey" or Detritus' "Dil wyn", etc.), some were released this year (like OPGave's "Writing The Silver"...), and some are brand new previously unreleased tunes (Leaf, Saltillo and even Sunday Munich - their first new tune in god knows how many years). A perfect compilation - each track is a standout on it's own, catchy enough to demand instant push of repeat button; yet all of them are interconnected and rock solid as a whole.
