A COIL DISCOGRAPHY
last updated: January 1st, 2005
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
A discography of releases from Coil and related projects, including remix/
production work, collaborations, and appearances by Coil members on other
artist's releases.
The latest version of this document, as well as a large amount of other Coil
related information, can be found at
http://www.brainwashed.com/coilThe official Coil website can be found at

COIL: AN INTRODUCTION
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
COIL was formed on May 11th, 1983 by JOHN BALANCE (aka Geff Rushton, Jhon[n]
Balance), at the time a member of Psychic TV. Initially, Coil co-existed
with another project called Zos Kia, with the core members of both bands
being Balance, his fellow PTV member JOHN GOSLING (aka Joan d'Arc) and MIN.
This line-up played four live performances as Coil and/or Zos Kia throughout
1983, often aided by PETER "SLEAZY" CHRISTOPHERSON (ex-Throbbing
Gristle, and also a member of PTV).
Soon after the appearance of Coil/Zos Kia and Psychic TV at the infamous
Berlin Atonal Festival on December 3rd, 1983, Balance and Christopherson
left Psychic TV and Zos Kia, becoming the core of Coil.
Balance and Christopherson remained the two primary members of the group
until Balance's death by accidental fall on November 13th, 2004. Soon
after this event, Christopherson announced that Coil would cease to exist,
although both he and Jhonn's partner, Ian Johnstone, would be continuing
musical and artistic endevours in the same spirit. This discography will
include any material that they may release in the future.

Other members of Coil over the years included:
* DANNY HYDE: While never named an "official" member, Hyde was Coil's long-
time producer and collaborator, and was active in co-writing some of their
material.
* STEPHEN THROWER: A member circa 1986 to 1991. Previous to this, he was a
member of the band Possession, who released one album and appeared on several
compilations. He has also contributed to recordings by Skullflower, Satin
Chickens, Identical and Put Put, and in 1998 he partnered with Simon Norris
to form Cyclobe.
* OTTO AVERY: Listed as a member on GOLD IS THE METAL, LOVE'S SECRET
DOMAIN and other releases, although according to Sleazy, he didn't actually
contribute musically but was simply a young guy who looked good in their
publicity shots. Sleazy has also commented that the name has been used by
John Balance on occassion.
* DREW McDOWALL: Worked with Coil regularly through the early 90s, and
became an official member of the band in 1995. He was the husband of Rose
McDowall (Current 93, Strawberry Switchblade), but they are no longer
married. He left Coil and moved to NYC circa 1999/2000. He has done solo
work under the name Screwtape, and is currently working with Kara
Bohnenstiel under the name Captain Sons And Daughters.
* BILL BREEZE: An electric viola player, he joined in early 1997, and
ceased being an active member of the group in 2000.
* THIGHPAULSANDRA: Also a member of Spiritualized and Queen Elizabeth
(with Julian Cope), and collaborator with Jodie Evans of Anal, he is a
classically trained musician who officially joined Coil on January 26th,
1999. His membership was sporadic due to other committments, but he was
usually part of the live line-up, and participated on much of Coil's
recorded output from 1999 through 2004.
* SIMON NORRIS aka OSSIAN BROWN: formerly a member of Death In June, and
currently a member of Cyclobe (along with ex-Coil member Stephen Thrower),
Norris/Brown was a frequent member of Coil's live line-up.
Coil also featured many guest artists on their recordings including Rose
McDowall, Marc Almond, Gavin Friday, Clint Ruin (Foetus) and Annie Anxiety.

In 1994, Coil started releasing material under other names. These aliases
included The Eskaton, ELpH, Black Light District, Time Machines and Rosa
Mundi (the latter in collaboration with Rose McDowall and Robert Lee of
Sorrow). When used, these names are noted in the title section of the
listings.

Stealing the Words [3.VIII.82] / On Balance [5.V.82]
Notes:
The first five tracks ("Sicktone" to "Truth") form Side 1 of the
cassette, which is labelled "Zos Kia. Berlin Atonal. 3.XII.1983".
The remainder of the tracks form Side 2, which is credited to
"Coil/Zos Kia", and were recorded in 1982/83. The line-up of Coil
and Zos Kia were basically identical at this time.
The packaging of the first copies of this release was orangish-brown
in colour. Subsequent editions were green, as are the CD and LP
reissues.

[Rehersal 5.XIII.1983] / Silence & Secrecy (section) [Live at

Notes:
"Rape" is the same as "Violation" from the cassette release.
"Silence & Secrecy" is shorter than the version on the cassette.
The dates listed for "Sewn Open" and "Silence & Secrecy" are
incorrect. They should be 5.X.1983 and 5.VIII.1983 respectively.
The first CD edition is packaged in a mini LP style cardboard
slipcase, and includes a booklet with photos from Coil/Zos Kia
performances, text of a Coil Manifesto written by John Balance in
1983, and a transcript of a coversation between John Balance and
Peter Christopherson regarding the Coil/Zos Kia performances and
recordings.
The LP edition is a limited edition of 1000 copies on clear
vinyl and 140 copies on green vinyl - 100 signed and numbered,
40 signed and alphabetized. Signatures are John, Peter and John
Gosling. It includes an insert with most of the contents of the
booklet from the CD edition.
The Russian edition on ArsNova is unofficial. It is in a regular
jewelcase as opposed to the slipcase package of the official
edition. A logo printed on the cover claims that it is limited to
500 copies.

HOW TO DESTROY ANGELS
EP 1984 L.A.Y.L.A.H. Antirecords LAY 5 BE
EP 1988 L.A.Y.L.A.H. Antirecords LAY 5 BE
How to Destroy Angels / Absolute Elsewhere
Notes:
This release is subtitled "ritual music for the accumulation of male
sexual energy".
The b-side, "Absolute Elsewhere", is intended to be non-playable,
and according to Coil:
- first pressing had unplayable noise-filled grooves
- second pressing had playable multi-layered music
- third pressing had a smooth, grooveless surface as originally
intended.
However, there's also evidence of two other versions existing
(perhaps the 1988 edition?):
- playable b-side with a constant tone for around 15 minutes.
- playable b-side with a series of "test tones" in unconnected
locked grooves
First pressing included an A3 black & white poster.
1984 and 1988 editions have different labels from each other.
A pink vinyl edition exists, although it's unclear how many copies of
this edition were pressed. This may be a bootleg.
This track also appears on the UNNATURAL HISTORY anthology in mono
form, and various reworkings of the track appear on the HOW TO
DESTROY ANGELS (REMIXES AND RE-RECORDINGS) CD.

Ubu Noir / Panic / At the Heart of it All / Tenderness of Wolves /
The Spoiler / Clap / Solar Lodge / The Sewage Worker's Birthday
Party / Godhead = Deathead / Cathedral in Flames
Notes:
First pressing of 3000 copies had an "Anal Staircase" postcard pasted
over the Black Sun design on the cover. The same image was later used
for the sleeve of the ANAL STAIRCASE 12".
Second pressing of 2000 copies had a "Sexual Architechture" postcard
pasted on the cover of random copies.
Two more editions were planned but never released:
- a "skidmarked" coloured vinyl edition
- an edition with a bonus 7" on the German label Record Vox
The working title for this album was POISONS, and John Balance
originally intended to release it on his own Hearsay And Heresy
label.
The track "The Sewage Worker's Birthday Party" was originally
intended for release as a single-sided flexidisk to be included with
an issue an Italian magazine called "Free". This release never took
place.

Notes:
"The S.W.B.P." is the same as "The Sewage Worker's Birthday Party"
from the LP release. "Godhead = Deathead" has an intro that is not
on the LP version.
Initial pressings of the Some Bizarre CD had black lettering and
graphics on a white background. This was switched to white-on-black
on later pressings. This CD has been re-pressed many times since
the initial release, but all later Some Bizarre editions are
unauthorized by Coil. All Some Bizarre pressings have the tracks
"Restless Day" and "Aqua Regis" listed in the wrong order on the
cover, but the tracks appear on the disc in the order above.
A reissue via Wax Trax! Records was announced, but was cancelled
when Coil severed their contract with the label following its buy
out by TVT Records.
The Always/Stable cassette edition is unofficial. It is a bootleg
of the Some Bizarre CD, and has "Restless Day" and "Aqua Regis"
listed in the wrong order on the insert.
The Russian edition on ArsNova is unofficial. A logo printed on the
cover claims that it is limited to 500 copies.
The Threshold House CD pressing is remastered by Thighpaulsandra,
and is fully authorized by Coil. It features a different cover from
the Some Bizarre edition, with the text "Stevo, Pay Us What You Owe
Us!" printed on the cover and spine, in reference to the fact that
Stevo at Some Bizarre has not paid them for the many CD pressings
he has released. The cover also states that this is Volume 1 in a
series of remastered reissues, with Volume 2 being HORSE ROTORVATOR
and Volume 3 being LOVE'S SECRET DOMAIN. The spine mistakenly has it
printed as Volume 2.

Several track titles were changed slightly for the official album
release, and "Acapulco March" was completely renamed to "Herald".

Broken Wheel / Boy in a Suitcase / Golden Hole / Cardinal Points /
Red Slur / ...Of Free Enterprise / Aqua Regalia / Metal in the Head
/ Either His or Yours / Chickenskin / Soundtrap / The First Five
Minutes After Violent Death
Notes:
From the liner notes: "This release is not the follow-up to HORSE
ROTORVATOR... but a completely seperate package - a stopgap and a
breathing space - the space between two twins. Presented here are
thoroughbreds that escaped the Horse Rotorvator - discarded shards,
distortions, disappointments, scrambled and disassembled stages.
Remnants of what once was. This record is a chance for us to
release some otherwise placeless pieces of music."
The first LP release took 5 different forms:
(1) Regular release on black vinyl, possibly limited to 2000 copies.
Some copies were signed by John & Peter at London's Rough Trade
record shop on March 12th, 1988.
(2) A limited edition, some copies including THE WHEEL 7". One
source says this edition was limited to 900 copies, some on red
vinyl and some on clear. A second source states that it was
limited to 650 copies, 150 on red vinyl and 500 clear.
(3) Another limited edition (possibly a test pressing) on red vinyl,
including THE WHEEL 7", in an unfinished sleeve, limited to 25
copies.
(4) A deluxe box set released in 1988 and limited to 55 copies.
The box looks like a hardcover book with a black linen cover and
an 8-pointed star printed on the front in gold ink. The album is
pressed on clear vinyl, and the outer sleeve has no text on the
front cover and is finished with gold leaf. The set also includes
a copy of THE WHEEL 7", a numbered & signed certificate, a credits
insert, two posters, three colour prints and a booklet.
(5) In 2001, 25 extra copies of the original vinyl release were
found and offered for sale via Coil's mail order website. The
outer sleeve for these copies are the same as those used in the
deluxe box set edition.
The second LP release has slightly different packaging. Initial
copies included the KEELHAULER 7".

Notes:
The first CD release was initially limited to 1000 numbered copies.
It was later released as a regular edition. Both versions have a
problem with the track indexing on the last three tracks.
The second CD release is subtitled RETURNING TO THE PURITY OF THE

fixed for this version.
The Russian editions on ArsNova are unofficial. A logo printed on the

The remainder of the tracks (which constitute side B of the release)
are a selection of short peices that were commissioned for use as

"Music For Commercials". These tracks were originally planned to be
released as a limited edition 7" EP on R+D Group 28.

The Wheal / Keelhauler
Notes:
This limited edition release was initially only available with
initial copies of the second LP release of GOLD IS THE METAL.
"Keelhauler" is unavailable elsewhere. "The Wheal" appears on the
CD editions of GOLD IS THE METAL.
In 1996, a few remaining copies were found by John and Sleazy who
made them available via the Internet. Each copy came with a special
handmade sleeve that reads: "This so-called special edition of Coil's
Keelhauler single is one of 23 copies found at the back of a wardrobe
and offered for sale via rec.music.industrial at the outrageous price
of $20." (This message is meant to poke fun at the fact that several
r.m.i subscribers commented that they felt the price was too high,
triggering a heated debate regarding the ethics of limited edition
releases.) The other side of the sleeve features John & Sleazy's
photos, signatures and fingerprints (probably another poke at the
supposed "criminal nature" of the release). Each copy also included
several stickers as inserts.

WRONG EYE/SCOPE
7" 1990 Shock Records SX002 UK
Wrong Eye / Scope
Notes:
Limited edition of 2300 copies, broken down as follows:
- 26 copies in a pink sleeve, lettered (A to Z) and signed by Coil
and cover artist Savage Pencil
- 974 copies in white sleeve, numbered
- 1000 copies in yellow sleeve
- 300 copies in green sleeve
Some copies have a gold sticker with a black "demonic" emblem in
the middle circle on the front cover.
"Wrong Eye" is described by Coil as being a "rough sketch" of the
track "Windowpane" (from LOVE'S SECRET DOMAIN). Coil has also
stated that speculation about "Scope" being an early version of
"Her Friends The Wolves" (from STOLEN AND COTAMINATED SONGS) is
false, and that the track was actually a "studio jam" fueled by
"experimenting with MDMA".
Both tracks appear on THE PORTABLE ALTAMONT compilation CD and the
anthology release UNNATURAL HISTORY III along with "Meaning What
Exactly?", another track recorded around the same time.

Notes:
As the subtitle of this release suggests, this is a collection of
tracks that appeared on various compilations and limited edition
releases between 1983 and 1990.
The track "How To Destroy Angels" appears here in a mono version.
Early pressings of this release are succeptable to the "disc rot"
problem that has been striking many discs pressed by PDO in the
early '90's. This problem is first evidenced by the label side of
the disc turning colour to a gold or bronze, followed by a static-
like deterioration of the sound on the disc starting from the last
track and moving backwards.
The Russian edition on ArsNova is unofficial. A logo printed on the
cover claims that it is limited to 500 copies.

for a "companion" release to this album)

Notes:
"The Snow" and "Windowpane" appear in extended forms on the CD
editions, although it is not noted.
A handful of early copies of the Torso edition were pressed with the
wrong music. Most of them were returned to Torso and destroyed.
The Russian editions are unofficial. They both have altered
packaging and different fonts/colours are used in some places. The
1999 version has "The Snow" misspelt "The Show" on the cover. A
logo printed on the cover of the ArsNova edition claims that it is
limited to 500 copies.
The Threshold House CD pressing is remastered by Thighpaulsandra,
and the opening to "Disco Hospital" is slightly edited. The cover
is slightly different, featuring an expanded view of the painting by
Steven Stapleton, and the back cover features the track listing in
gold ink on a black background, making it much easier to read than
the original edition. The reissue does not include a lyric booklet.

Notes:
This release is to LOVE'S SECRET DOMAIN as GOLD IN THE METAL is to
HORSE ROTORVATOR - a collection of outtakes, oddities, etc.
Limited edition of 2000 copies.
Mail order copies included a skull/Coil sticker and no song titles.
All other copies have a sticker on the back listing the titles and
other release information. Many of the song titles were incorrect,
however, as they were taken from an advance rough cassette and used
by World Serpent. The titles were corrected for the re-release
edition listed below.
This release is also succeptable to the "disc rot" problem mentioned
in the notes for UNNATURAL HISTORY.
There was a bootleg edition of this release which can only be spotted
by checking the inner ring of the CD - the official release reads
"LOCICD4 10204341 01 &" and "MADE IN THE U.K. BY PDO".
Around the time of the CD's original release, Coil issued a
newsletter stating that they would also be releasing a special vinyl
edition containing 45 minutes of the material from the CD, limited to
1000 numbered copies. This release was subsequently cancelled.

titles were corrected (although "Further" is mistitled "Futhur" on
the cover), but it's otherwise identical to the original release.
