ZAPPANALE FESTIVAL INTERVIEW WITH ADRIAN BELEW
Arf: Hallo Adrian, thanks a lot for taking the time for this interview, we all know how busy you are performing, writing and producing.
You are just back from a terrific tour down under in australia, where the people had their first chance to see you life on stage. Must have been a fantastic experience for you and your fans.
Adrian:
you can read my reactions at adrianbelew.net in the section called adrian's corner.
it was an exciting eye-opening experience in the sense of playing for a "virgin" audience who had no idea what to expect.
when in melbourne they spontaneously pulled me into the audience and "crowd-surfed" me, I knew we had done well.
the aussies are such lovely people and their country so clean and beautiful, it's a guilty pleasure to play there.
Arf: Now it's only a few more weeks before we have the great pleasure to present you as our headliner at the Zappanale-Festival. What did you hear about our festival, what do you exspect from it?
Adrian:
mostly what I know about zappanale has come second-hand from the players in paul green's school of rock who performed at the festival. unanimously they have said how well treated they were and what a great vibe the festival has.
what do I expect? I expect to be seriously nervous for a bit, then to focus in, hit the stage, play a fabulous show, wipe off the nervous sweat, and go out and meet the zappa fans who hopefully loved every minute.
Arf: As we all know and what makes it especially interesting for us to have you on stage, is the fact you were playing side by side with Frank Zappa in the mid 70's. Unforgettable your performance on "Sheik Yerbouti" and "Baby Snakes". What's your most important memories about your time with Zappa?
Adrian:
frank is my most important memory. how lucky I am to have my own home movie of frank imbedded in my brain like a dvd I can revisit at will. every mannerism; the way he talked or gestured or held a cigarette, it's all in my head.
the best thing about working alongside frank was the opportunity to soak up so much information from a true genius.
all the stories he told imparted humor but also wisdom. frank was very generous to me. unwittingly he became the mentor to a green naive kid from nashville who had never even played in an odd time signature and he prepared me for a life-long career in music. thanks frank...I guess.
Arf: Have you ever been asked by the Zappa-Family-Trust to join the Zappa-plays-Zappa tour?
Adrian:
last november gail zappa attended my show in los angeles.
I have always admired gail for her business acumen and the way she has protected and served frank's great legacy.
in fact my wife martha and I have modeled our business on the zappas (our own label, e-store, studio, etc.) after the show gail told me about zappa plays zappa and asked if I would participate.
I told her I felt strongly indebted to frank for all he did for me and certainly would make myself available.
as yet I have not been called but it doesn't surprise me because the part I played in frank's music was very slight by comparison to others such as terry bozzio, steve vai, ed mann, or tommy mars. sadly, I was only with frank for one year.
Arf: As we heard you changed your power-trio to include Eric and Julie Slick as drummer and bassist for your upcoming tours. We all know these two young and high talented musicians from earlier Zappanale-Festivals.
Why did you choose especially these two for the future?
Adrian:
eric and julie played "city of tiny lights" with me during a school of rock show. they are such eager bright young people but mature and mindful. secretly I am drawn to the role of teacher but likely they'll end up teaching me more than I'll teach them.
I needed a clean slate, to start fresh with players who aren't "jaded"
to the oppressing music business, people who respect my work
and are willing to put as much into it as I do. many of the "virtuoso"
players I have known have too many outside entanglements (wives, kids, car payments, mortgages, etc.) and can't surrender themselves to the music like we did when we were younger.
that's what I hope to find with eric and julie: not just the joy of playing great music together but the ability to ignore everything else.
Arf: What can your fans exspect from your show at Zappanale? Will it be a mix of Adrian Belew and King Crimson? Should there be the chance to listen to some Frank Zappa tunes? For example "City of tiny lights", a song all fans are waiting for, or is it still a secret?
Adrian:
it's a secret whether or not we'll play something of frank's. but certainly we will play a challenging dose of crimson/belew.
Arf: What are your next plans for 2006?
Adrian:
following last week's rehearsals with eric and julie I am now writing
the last two songs for the next bear's record.
it's perhaps the best bear's record yet and these two songs will
complete it. I hope it can be released early this fall.
following that the power trio will play shows throughout the U.S. and
parts of europe. then I have plans to work with
robert fripp in the guise of project six (fripp n' adrian) a two man
group aimed at improvising live material to become
the building blocks for the next generation of king crimson material.
robert and I hope to have something to present
tony levin and pat mastelotto by the end of 2007 to get the ball
rolling towards a new king crimson record.
somewhere along the way I want to record my first-ever live record with
the trio, to be called "side four".
Arf: Thanks again for taking your time. I'm shure every Belew fan in
Europe is already very excited to see on Zappanale-stage in july.
my pleasure.
