The Beatles - Men & Horses, Hoops & Garters (2001)CD-R 2001 - No Label
Booklet Notes:As the title suggests, there is some digital sleight of hand at work here. "Men and Horses, Hoops and Garters" a collection of Beatles tracks that were created by combining various versions or elements of certain performances into new and unique interpretations of the songs. Many times this resulted in a "before and after" image, much like what was done with "Yes It Is" on "Anthology 2" (which was the inspiration for this effort), in other cases completely new mixes have been created. All of these tracks are fully composed of Beatles performances. Other than some slight tempo adjustment, nothing has been added to any of these performances.
Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Bandis a remix of the isolated 5.1 tracks. This version emphasizes the churning
rhythm groove.
With A Little Help From My FriendsOOPSed version of the remix from the "Yellow Submarine Songtrack". This particular
track draws your attention to Lennon's vocals, as well as the inverted chord
structure of the Beatles' background harmonies.
Glass Onion consists of a remix of Lennon's demo version followed by the second half of the
commercial version.
And I Love Heris the Anthology rehearsal take cross-faded into the CV during the guitar break.
She Loves You "She Loves You" (stereo) is especially stunning when heard on headphones; the
doubling of the guitars and vocals on the chorus makes this a true power pop
performance.
Eight Days A Weekis the CV book-ended with studio banter and vocal rehearsal.
She's A Womanis take 1 cross-faded with the CV.
Good Morning, Good Morning"Good Morning, Good Morning" combines five different sources into an aural
documentary of this classic song.
I Me Mineis a rehearsal take cross-faded into the CV.
Honey Pie"Honey Pie" emphasizes how much more fun the demo is to listen to than the
commercial version.
It's Only Loveis the Anthology rehearsal take cross-faded in to the CV.
Get BackThe extended ending version, fading out and in (much like "Strawberry Fields
Forever").
Sour Milk Sea"Sour Milk Sea" combines the Kinfauns demo with the Jackie Lomax recording.
When it works, the effect is very intriguing.
I Am The Walrus"I Am The Walrus" combines the commercial version, the Anthology track, the
extended ending from "Acetates", and the isolated "King Lear" speech and a
small bit from the Lost Lennon Tapes into a new stereo version.
Old Brown Shoecross-fades the Anthology demo with the CV at the middle eight. The dual
lead guitars work together pretty well here.
Why Don't We Do It In The Road"Why Don't We Do It In The Road" highlights the extreme differences between
the acoustic demo and the finished version.
What You're Doingcombines the rehearsal version with the CV. A bit of digital cut-and-paste
added some dramatic effect to the seque.
Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkeyfeatures an extended crossfade from the Kinfauns demo into the CV. Some
slight tempo adjustment was necessary to make it work.
Across The Universe"Across The Universe" combines unique elements from both the Phil Spector
mix and the George Martin mix.
Let It BeThe double length lead guitar version (George's leads presented consecutively,
not simultaneously).
Isn't It A Pity/Hey Judeemphasizes the similarities in the choruses of both songs.
"Tracks 1, 3, 5, 12 and 19 are contributions from other sources, and I must say "thank you" to those people who very generously offered to share their hard work to help complete this collection. My gratitude also goes to those who have offered suggestions, inspiration and encouragement. A big thanks also to xx for his hard work in designing the artwork for this set. See you next time..
