Release Notes:
As one of the weakest tracks on the recent Luna LP, The Sunlamp
Show is a peculiar choice to lead the new Aliens LP, however
considering both the radio inaccessibility of many of its album peers
(not that The Aliens will be expecting that much radio play anyway)
when taken in isolation and the fact it lends itself spectacularly well
to a remix their choice is vindicated.
The first of those remixes come from Dalston DJs Disco Bloodbath,
effectively doing for the track what Andy Weatherall did for Primal
Screams Im Losing More Than Ill Ever Have. Over nearly ten
minutes they tease out the finest elements of the song, churn them
together with suitably baggy beats and leave it kicking and screaming
on the steps of the indie disco. Its literally a Just what is it
that you want to do?... sample away from remix of the year.
The Aliens very own John MacLean (aka Manmouse) tackles the second mix
adding doom-laden piano, menacing vocal filters and fierce,
intimidating hip hop beats. This nicely compliments fellow Alien Robin
Jones mix of album track Boats under his Roman Noise moniker.
Again, its a very interesting new direction which brings new dub
sensibilities to the cosmic album version - now very different to the
Lone Pigeon original.
Brand new track Pernickitty Jack brings both the bands metal and
blues side to the forefront sounding like a bizarre collaboration
between Slayer, John Lee Hooker and the Reynolds Girls. Sonically its
very reminiscent of Luna and would have fitted in nicely if it were
not for the superior full-length jams already on there.
So, an essential purchase for fans but not the entry point suitable for
Aliens virgins - that remains their excellent debut LP Astronomy for
Dogs.
