Ours everywhere. The holder of pseudonym Chinawoman, just like in a fairy tale, turns out to be a Russian girl from Canada named Michelle, who, unlike Regina Spektor or Angelina from Persephone's Bees, has never been to Russia.
However, the daughter of a ballerina from the Kirov theater and a director from Leningrad, was raised on her parents' collection of Soviet vinyl records, and knows well the likes of Alla Pugacheva and VIA [vocal-instrumental ensemble] «Leysya pesnya!» [«Let the song fly»].
Her debut album, where Michelle plays on almost all the instruments, from the first note unceremoniously grabs the soul - that same melancholy that always finds resonance in the Russian heart - and never lets go.
Despite the title «Party Girl», the main track, even in the «club» mix version, has nothing in common with the discothèque, not to mention the other compositions. These sad, energetically restrained songs with old-fashioned electric organ, gloomy chords and a low deep voice are reminiscent of Leonardo Cohen, but even more so - the canonized Queen of the Junkies, Nico.
