It’s combination of live and electronic elements fused together. I got a chance to work with a few great musicans such as Karsh Kale from Tabla Beat Science, Angel Figaroea, a master percussionist who’s played with Herbie Hancock but also Sting, Celia Cruz, Mongo Santamaria, and Vinx just to name a few, another featured percussionist Ken Robertson and my friend Gary Durdan from the famous TV show CSI. The album is a fusion of traditional folkloric ryhthms and visual orchestration.

Sometimes, when a jazz vocalist does a big band arrangement of a rock or pop hit, the results can be classical. Robin McKelle avoids that trap from the very start with her swinging rendition of Steve Miller's "Abracadabra." The lyrics are perfectly suitable for a jazz offering, and the blend of McKelle's voice and the horns is magical. That cover opens "Modern Antique", McKelle's follow-up to her debut, "Introducing Robin McKelle" (Cheap Lullaby, 2006). Boston-bred McKelle has taught voice at her alma mater, Berklee College of Music, and has sung with the |Boston Pops|. As she did before, McKelle invested a lot of her personal finances to make this project come to life—commissioning the arrangements and hiring the musicians. The ensemble delivers a delightful take on Irving Berlin's "Cheek to Cheek." After the second chorus, the horns come in with a flourish, setting up Chris Gottlieb's tenor sax solo. Though the tenor is in the lead, the other horns provide subtle background, before McKelle comes back in with energy and passion. One of the more enjoyable songs, on an album that's loaded with them, is "Go to Hell." This low-range piece features muted trumpets in the background and a slick rhythm. McKelle shows some vocal dexterity here, singly softly for the music part but belting it out when it matters. The emphatic points are made solidly by her voice and the horns, in total synch. Throughout, Dan Higgins underscores on the flute. George Shearing's "Lullaby of Birdland" is given star treatment. McKelle scats worthy of one of her influences, Ella Fitzgerald, and the brass comes through powerfully. McKelle complements this collection of standards with her own composition, "Remember." This original ballad features McKelle's voice, backed only by the piano and the string section. Like many vocalists, McKelle covers classics. What sets her apart though, is her knack for making them sound almost original with new arrangements, making "Modern Antique" an appropriate title and a fine collection.

But hey, the guy is a legend. "New Time, New 'Tet" is his first album since 2004's "Terminal 1," which followed his appearance in the Tom Hanks movie "The Terminal." He's back with the same band - trumpeter Eddie Henderson, pianist Mike LeDonne, bassist Buster Williams, and drummer Carl Allen - plus trombonist Steve Davis. The 'Tet in the title alludes to Golson's 1959 sextet, which he called the Jazztet. That band recorded one of jazz's most famous songs (and one of its rare jukebox hits), Golson's "Killer Joe," and another Golson classic, "Whisper Not," which he revisits here, with guest vocals from Al Jarreau. But this is no retread. We've got some serious bop going on here, from new originals to covers of warhorses like Thelonious Monk's "Epistrophy" and Sonny Rollins's "Airegin" to jazz arrangements of pieces by Chopin and Verdi. It's true that Golson, who turns 80 this month, is looking back 50 years with this sextet, but he's also still looking ahead.

Сейчас мне кажется, что в молодые годы наши композиторские способности опережали наши исполнительские, и мы не всегда могли играть то, что сочинили. Сейчас такая возможность есть. В альбом вошли песни "Машины времени" разных лет, некоторые из них очень старые, как, например, "Пони", "Маленький город" или "Путь". Они совсем иначе аранжированы, совсем иначе сыграны. Помимо "Оркестра Креольского Танго" в записи участвовали еще духовая секция, один из сильнейших джазовых коллективов Москвы "Jazz Town Band", а также ансамбль "A`Сappella ExpreSSS", так что состав исполнителей, звучащий на альбоме, скорее напоминает небольшой джаз-банд.
