Scott Hamilton is a player in the Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Lester Young tradition. He may not be an "innovator" or a groundbreaking soloist but he has been a steady standard bearer of this traditional, straight ahead style of jazz for over thirty years. I have been a fan since the early 80's and I can honestly say that Hamilton has never disappointed me on his recordings. They are consistent, enjoyable, and above all, highly musical. Scoredaddy

Tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton (who can be overly relaxed and comfortable at times) often sounds at his most heated when playing with pianist Dave McKenna, and all of their collaborations are easily recommended. This Hamilton-McKenna effort with bassist Phil Flanigan and drummer Jeff Hamilton mostly emphasizes ballads (although sometimes at medium tempos), plus a cooking version of "How High the Moon" and Hamilton's original "O.K." A typically swinging and consistent Scott Hamilton record which has been reissued on CD. Scott Yanow

This album is refreshing. Sam Butera, "speaks more eloquently through his tenor sax than some people can with words in a whole year." Backing "The Big Horn" are "The Witnesses" the group that's on all the Capitol albums by Sam's mentor, Louis Prima. Lou Sino is on trombone, Bobby Roberts is swinging on guitar and Willie "The Wailer" MacCumber is rocking the piano. The rhythm comes from Chu Chu Liuzza on bass and Paul Ferrara on drums. This is a classic in jazz favorites and a great addition for a jazz collector

In Summer 2008 a newly invigorated Susan, began working on fresh ideas for her follow-up album. In September 2008 Susan travelled to Geneva, Switzerland to work on demos with producer Adrien Z. As Susan explained “He brought my music ideas to life. He was able to transform the songs I want to sing into the styling which I dare tried.” The album recording was completed in February/March 2009. In her blog Susan said of the album; “I guess I took a "more hands on" approach with this album, more than any of the previous ones, as I felt the need to voice out my persona, be more individualistic and independent for my work.” ”

Originally recorded on 2 10" discs for Period Records in 1954, this fairly obscure early Charles Mingus session is a collaboration with composer John LaPorta, who is heard on clarinet and alto saxophone. It's a fascinating effort that shows Mingus' awareness of both modern European classical composition and cool jazz. Down Beat reviewer Nat Hentoff called the first ten-inch release of this album, recorded in 1954 and originally issued on the Period label, “Mingus’ most wholly realized dates so far as a leaderwriter or, more accurately, it’s the one that has most directly communicated to me in terms of emotions as well as concepts.” The set features Mingus on bass and piano, co-leader John LaPorta on alto sax and clarinet, Teo Macero on tenor and baritone, Thad Jones on trumpet, cellist Jackson Wiley, and drummer Clem DeRosa playing three Mingus compositions, one by Macero, another by Mingus and LaPorta, and ingenious reworkings of the standards “What Is This Thing Called Love?” and “Stormy Weather.” The liner notes are by Mingus himself. The album features Mingus' debut on piano.

Since their birth in 1977, the pioneering Dirty Dozen Brass Band has extended the New Orleans Second Line tradition into rock, R&B, funk, and hip-hop. Led by trumpeter-vocalist Gregory Davis, the nonet is joined by several cutting-edge guest artists. Dr. John lends his Crescent City piano chords and deep-south vocals on "Everything I Do Gon' Be Funky" and the festive "Big Chief." The gravel-voiced John Bell, of Georgia-based jam band Widespread Panic, chimes in on the hip-shaking "Walk on Gilded Splinters." Robert Randolph's ghostly steel pedal guitar casts its spell on Aaron Neville's "Tell It Like It Is," and the young diva Norah Jones's tender Texas twang graces the ballad "Ruler of My Heart." DJ Logic's turntable scratches provide the gumbo on the autobiographical "We Got Robbed," and the Mississippi-born blues bard Olu Dara adds his Delta-derived voice to "Junko Partner."
