Funk This“
THIS IS THE ORIGINAL FUNK THIS! CD. It is authorized by Brian Ogawa Co-Producer for this Record and BKO Records CEO.
The remix is good, but not the original. All versions of this CD are Authorized.
Funk This! Is an international music project comprised of 5 top music professionals, from around the world.
The Project, although brand new, was forged out of the friendships of three individuals, some 18 years ago, when Chris Clermont, Brian Ogawa, and Henrik Engquist met in a practice room on the first day of Music School, and soon became inseparable, playing everyday together during school under the name, "Felix the Cat".
After graduation, Henrik went back to Denmark, and Brian and Chris went on to tour and or record with the likes of, Barry White, Shalamar, MC Hammer Dr Dre, Maxine Nightingale, Rod Stewart, Brian Auger, Michelle, 10 to 1, Miriam Fay, Steve Tyrell, Deanna Johnston, and many, many others.
The Three lost touch with one another for some years, working in the music industry separately. Fast-forward 18 years, and through the miracle of the Internet, they were reunited. Henrik, having gone on to huge fame and success in Denmark (his last CD featured, Robben Ford, Frank Gambale, Jimmy Haslip, from the Yellow Jackets, and David Garfield) and Brian and Chris working in America, the three started scheming on how to once again play together, It was through this that Henrik worked out a tour and recording a CD in Denmark during Aug-Sept. 2004. This CD has live recordings from that tour, as well as the studio tracks finished in Jan. 2005 which also feature Alex Acuna on percussion and Ellis Hall from Tower of Power on vocals and keyboards. Additional special guest vocalists, Janet Sedlar(aka. Jasmin Sky) and Annette Maree
Added to the group is Fabrizio Mandolini on sax from Italy, and Poul Reimann on keyboards, from Denmark, who immediately during the first rehearsal became, "brothers", as if in reenactment of that first meeting between the three. These two are also top musicians in their respective countries if not in the world.
This Project, as Chris likes to say, is more about friendship and brotherhood, then it is necessarily about music. The music is just the vehicle for expressing the friendship, and although, the music is smoking hot, hopefully we have communicated through the music the joy that camaraderie and friendship brings. ”

http://rapidshare.com/files/308809062/CMingus_Tonight.rarA valuable reissue for Mingus fans, Tonight at Noon compiles five tunes originally recorded for two of the great bassist's most important album's, 1957's The Clown and 1961's Oh Yeah. Though the two sessions cover somewhat different stylistic ground, they blend together seamlessly and amount to much more than a haphazard assemblage of dusty outtakes.
The earlier session is the more restrained of the two, with Mingus and a typically responsive quintet (trombonist Jimmy Knepper, alto saxophonist Shafi Hadi, pianist Wade Legge and drummer Dannie Richmond) expertly weaving a path between the extremes of European impressionism (on the haunting "Passions of a Woman Loved") and hard bop (on the fast-paced title tune). The 1961 date is a more freewheeling journey into the blues and gospel roots of jazz via Duke Ellington, with Mingus switching to piano (an instrument on which he was more than proficient) and handing the bass duties over to Doug Watkins. The hard-swinging group also includes Mingus stalwarts Knepper and Richmond, along with the dynamic saxophone duo of Booker Ervin and Rahsaan Roland Kirk.
Though most of the compositions on Tonight at Noon are not well known (with the exception of "Peggy's Blue Skylight" from the 1961 session) and several make their only appearances in the Mingus catalog here, there's certainly nothing second rate about these tunes. Along with the time limitations of the LP era, one gets the impression that, if anything, they were left off the original albums because they were even more provocative than the selected cuts. This is vital, exciting music.(allaboutJazz)

Spanky Wilson & the Quantic Soul Orchestra - I'm Thankful (2006)

# 05. Don't Joke With A Hungry Man (Part 3)

# 10. I'm Thankful (Part 2)
SpankyIt was much to soul singer Spanky Wilson's surprise -- she didn't realize she had had such an impact -- when British multi-instrumentalist/producer Will Holland contacted her in her Los Angeles home in 2004, professing his love of her music and wondering if she'd collaborate with him. Still, she agreed to go the studio, and together they did two songs, "Don't Joke with a Hungry Man" and "When You're Through," for Holland's solo project, Quantic, on the album Mishaps Happening. That collaboration worked out so well that they decided to make an entire record together, this time with Holland's full band, the Quantic Soul Orchestra. Wilson's lovely voice is the centerpiece of I'm Thankful, and it does show a bit of its age, but only in the best of ways, deepening it and giving it an added measure of credibility and authenticity while still preserving its expressiveness and strength. Attesting to Wilson's tremendous ability is the fact that the record is very intimately and sparsely produced, making it seem as if the singer is almost in the room right with the you, the sometimes raspy and breathy line endings audible in that professional, practiced way. The band, which plays J.B.'s-inspired tight funk riffs, occasionally branching into modern jazz horn solos or even wah-wahed guitars, often uses a modern dancefloor-esque beat (in both versions of "Don't Joke with a Hungry Man," for example, which are different from the Quantic one), which makes sense as Holland is an able electronica producer as well as composer (besides the cover of Bo Diddley's "You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover," all the pieces on the album are completely written and arranged by him). But the music here is still funk, horns and all, and since the drums are always live, there's still a nice organic sense about it. The neo-soul "That's How It Was," which reflects upon Hurricane Katrina, is touching and affecting, and as Wilson sings, "Now people are talking 'bout a need for a change/Hoping and fighting for power exchange/Thank heavens for life, but not for the pain/Thousands of tears just washed away in that rain," there's a real emotion and tenderness in her voice that comes through clearly and honestly. Because I'm Thankful is about clarity and avoiding pretension, it's about rhythm and groove, it's about playing soul music for its own sake, which makes it a very successful album, a great melding of two talented artists -- and an introduction to Spanky Wilson for many who haven't heard her before, and need to -- and a lot of fun. -- AMG ”
