Risky Blues

Before there was “Gabe’s Dirty Blues,” there was this collection of double entendre King and Federal R&B wig poppers. First released on King in 1971, this LP re-appeared on Gusto in 1976 and is uploaded here in its Bellaphon (Germany) edition.

So this is the album that has spawned a host of collections of “dirty” blues tracks based on the output of the King group of labels. In the late 1940s and early to mid 1950s, King certainly seems to have been the home of risqué rhythm releases. Of course most of this stuff seems rather tame nowadays, but even in these more wordly times some of these sides may still cause eyes to pop. I’m thinking in particular of The Swallows’ fine “It Ain’t The Meat.” And how on earth did Jesse Powell and Fluffy Hunter get away with “The Walkin’ Blues?” Shame on all those folks who snickered at these “lee-rics.” Of course I bought this LP because of the fine musicianship, especially the screeching tenor sax breaks contained in most of the tracks.

Big Joe Turner - Jumpin' Tonight

There was never another blues shouter who could match Big Joe Turner for sheer volume (it was as though the guy was equipped with an internal echo chamber) or for the ability to bawl out verse after verse of real and righteous blues. His vast repertoire was acquired during a remarkably long career which stretched back to the bars and clubs of 1920s Kansas City and forward to the dawn of rock and roll in the studios of Atlantic Records in the 1950s and onward ever onward, yea even unto the 1980s, that accursed decade of synth pop and big hair.

This 1985 Pathe Marconi LP brings together tracks from two stages of Big Joe Turner’s long career. The first nine tracks were recorded for Aladdin in 1947 while the remainder are from a 1950 Imperial session at Cosimo Matassa’s J&M Studio in New Orleans.

Lionel Hampton - Live In Paris

Although the inside of the gatefold sleeve states that this album was recorded at the Olympia in 1961, it is in fact a recording of a 1956 concert at the world famous Paris venue. The tracks were recorded on the 28th and 30th of January. The band personnel includes Eddie Chamblee and Rickey Brauer on tenor saxes and Curtis Lowe on baritone sax.

“When I bought the Shamrock Tavern in Seattle, the seamen and street people didn't cotton up to me at first. It took 6 months for me and my crazy music to win them over - and then it was standing room only for years. You see we started with blues and never changed except for jazz. That was it for 17 years. Jazz and blues - you never had it so good …
… The tunes in this album were basically the tunes I played on a juke box at the original Shamrock and later 'Gabe's' a downtown Seattle joint in the 1950s and 1960s.

Illinois Jacquet And His Tenor Sax

This music is a prime example of that unnameable genre that treads the line between R&B and jazz, although perhaps in this case veering more heavily towards the jazz side. But in the end categories don’t matter. When I listen to this LP I know I’m hearing the very stuff of Be Bop Wino Done Gone!
