Newport Jazz Festival (Great Moments In Jazz) - 1964
God bless festival producer George Wein for using his entrepreneurial skills to gather together these top jazz veterans at Newport on the evening of July 1, 1964. As he comments in his notes, this was his way of paying homage to these men who contributed so much to the wealth of jazz lore that helped make this music genre so great. Muggsy Spanier and Jo Sullivan were invited to come from California. George Brunis came from Chicago and Wingy Manone from New Orleans. The rest -- Edmond Hall, Joe Thomas, J. C. Higginbotham, Bobby Haggart, Bud Freeman, Max Kaminsky, Lou McGarity, Peanuts Hucko, Slam Stewart, George Wettling, Buzzie Drootin and Jo Jones -- all drove up from New York City.
Side 1:
01) Sweet Georgia Brown [This shows off the brilliance of Edmond Hall's clarinet.]
02) Tin Roof Blues [On this classic blues number it's easy to see why Max Kaminsky was
one of the most sought after of all jazz trumpeters.]
03) Stars Fell On Alabama [Lou McGarity pays his tribute to the immortal Big T -- Jack
Teagarden.]
04) I've Found A New Baby [Virtuoso Bud Freeman who has left his mark on countless tenor
players.]
05) At The Jazz Band Ball [Peanuts Hucko, Bud Freeman, Lou McGarity and Max Kaminsky
show us their ensemble skills with this Chicago Style classic.]
06) Isle Of Capri [There was only one Wingy Manone -- one of the real characters of jazz.]
Side 2:
01) Relaxin' At The Touro [This is a tribute from trumpeter Muggsy Spanier to the sanitorium
where he regained his health after a bout with TB.]
02) I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate [This features George Brunis, the then king of
the tailgate trombone.]
03) Royal Garden Blues [Highlighting George Wettling's drum style and Muggsy's great lead
horn.]
04) I'm In The Mood For Love [Joe Thomas on tenor with an assist by J. C. Higginbotham on
trombone.]
05) Big Noise From Winnetka [Bobby Haggart and Buzzie Drootin are featured in Haggart's
classic which was a hit record for the Bob Crosby Orchestra.]
06) Stealin' Apples [Peanut Hucko's "crib". He took the old Benny Goodman standard and made
it his own.]
