Metallica frontman James Hetfield has discovered a new way of life.
Hetfield has confirmed he's officially 'straight-edge' by exposing his new tattoo, which screams to the world the rocker follows the clean-living straight edge lifestyle.
'I don't need drink or drugs. That's straight-edge life,' Hetfield told the official Metallica fanclub magazine, So What. 'Obviously I'm not straight edge — a true, hardcore straight-edge has never had any of it in her or her whole life. But I'm a reborn straight-edge,' Hetfield reveals.
Straight edge is a lifestyle more commonly associated with hardcore punk, so just as long as the straight edge doesn't compromise the metal, it's all fine with us.
Hetfield elaborated further on the razor 'X' symbol that now adorns his wrist. 'This was certainly a design of my own. You know, the old straight-edge tattoo, it's just like a big X on your hand. No drinking, and I don't drink. It's like when you go into the clubs, they put an X on your hand.'
Though Hetfield gave up the hard-drinking rock 'n' roll lifestyle years ago, publicly proclaiming an affiliation with 'straight edge,' - the no drugs, no drinking, no promiscuous sex lifestyle developed by Minor Threat punk legend Ian McKaye - is a surprising new development for the heavy metal icon.
