Sam Crockatt Quartet - Flood Tide (2011)

http://www.filesonic.com/file/4278248935/s...floodtide11.rar

Tracklist:

1. Sun and Moon 04:37
2. Trilogy 06:56
3. The Golden Goose 06:20
4. King Apple 03:39
5. The Ridgeway 06:47
6. The Prophet 05:33
7. Theodore's Spring Song 05:46
8. Flood Tide 08:47

Personnel:

Sam Crockatt (tenor-sax)
Kit Downes (piano)
Oli Hayhurst (double bass)
Ben Reynolds (drums)

“Flood Tide” is saxophonist and composer Sam Crockatt’s keenly awaited follow up to “Howeird”, his 2009 release on the Loop Records label which won that year’s Parliamentary Jazz Award for best album. “Howeird” featured the pianistic talents of Gwilym Simcock, a factor that helped to bring the album a good deal of attention. Simcock’s increasingly busy schedule ensured that he was never likely to be a fixture in the Crockatt quartet and his place on this recording has gone to Kit Downes, a similarly talented (and these days almost as busy) player and composer. Crockatt’s regular rhythm section of double bassist Oli Hayhurst and drummer Ben Reynolds remain in situ and this new quartet configuration ensures that “Flood Tide” is a worthy follow up to its illustrious predecessor.

06. Sail Away
07. Opus Number one
08. Sweet Emma
09. Saint Louis Blues
10. Line for Lyons
11. Footprints
12. The Golden Striker
13. Loose Change

Personnel: Charles Pillow (English horn); Jerry Dodgion (soprano saxophone, alto saxophone); Steve Wilson (alto saxophone); Scott Robinson , Wayne Escoffery (tenor saxophone); Jay Brandford (baritone saxophone); Jon Owens, Greg Gisbert, Alex Norris, Tony Kadleck (trumpet, flugelhorn); James Burton III, Steve Davis , Jason Jackson (trombone); Douglas Purviance (bass trombone); Mulgrew Miller (piano); Lewis Nash (drums).

Ron Carter is one of the most recorded bassists in jazz. In his mid-seventies at the time of these sessions, he is very much still at the top of his game as he leads the first big-band date of his own, with potent arrangements by conductor Robert M. Freedman and including some of New York's busiest musicians, including Jerry Dodgion, Steve Wilson, Wayne Escoffery, and Scott Robinson in the woodwind section, brass players Steve Davis, Douglas Purviance, and Greg Gisbert, plus pianist Mulgrew Miller and drummer Lewis Nash, among others.

Freedman's charts are short and sweet, all of them under five minutes, with much of the focus on imaginative writing and Carter's melodic bass central in the mix. The material spans from the 1920s to the present, played with imagination. The opening "Caravan" is taken far from its roots, transformed into a breezy bop vehicle, even slipping in a dissonant snippet of "Hot House." The setting of Dizzy Gillespie's "Con Alma" retains its Latin flavor, with a lush introduction by the brass and reeds and strong solos by Miller and Carter. Carter's inventive bass provides the undercurrent for the brisk interpretation of Wayne Shorter's marvelous jazz standard "Footprints," while the upbeat performance of Gerry Mulligan's "Line for Lyons" would have pleased its composer. Carter has long been a prolific composer, and his "Loose Change" is a funky affair with marvelous interplay among the brass and reeds, while "Opus 1.5 (Theme for C.B.)" is mellow and somber, with Charles Pillow's mellow English horn prominent and an intricate solo by Carter. With this delightful big-band date, the veteran bassist continues to surprise and delight listeners during a career spanning five-plus decades.

* Special thanks to Martin Davies, Dennis, Drake, Seth Rothstein, Richard Seidel, Charles Stern, Jazz Magazine.
* Errol Garner photographed by Herman Leonard.

Another in a long line of fine Jazz 'Round Midnight collections from Verve, this Erroll Garner installment finds the pianist on a fine set of both trio sides and solo pieces. And if a jazz figure was ever tailor-made for this ballad-heavy series, then it's the dulcet-fingered Garner. This is especially true on such album highlights as "Don't Blame Me" and the extended solo rendition of "Over the Rainbow." Hit-loving fans need not worry, though, since Garner's perennial "Misty" also shows up. A fine start for the curious listener.
