Russians are ready to defend South Ossetia against Georgia and there is no holding them back, Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin says.
"Vladimir Putin stressed there were many volunteers in Russia and it would be difficult to restrain them," the prime minister's spokesman Dmitri Peskov was quoted by AFP as saying.
Putin, who made the remarks in Beijing where he is expected to attend the Olympics opening, also said that Georgia's aggressive stance on the breakaway province is bound to elicit a 'response' from Russia.
"Russia must intervene in the conflict to end the violence," influential MP Konstantin Zatulin said. "Russia must consider the military operation because our peacekeeping contingent will not be sufficient to ensure peace in the region."
Zatulin's remarks came after the Russian defense ministry issued a statement assuring that Russia would take necessary measures to ensure the safety of its citizens in the secessionist province while accusing Georgia of 'unleashing a dirty war' at the cost of the lives several people including the Russian nationals and peacekeepers there.
"Bloodshed in South Ossetia will be on their conscience" the statement said, Ria Novosti reported.
The Russian bases in South Ossetia as well as the republic's capital, Tskhinvali were subjected to the Georgian cannonade that killed and injured many including the peacekeepers.
