Lula’s remarks, as reported by The Times of Israel, stirred immediate backlash, particularly for his comparison of Israel’s actions in Gaza to the Holocaust perpetrated by Hitler’s regime.
He stated, “What’s happening in the Gaza Strip with the Palestinian people hasn’t happened at any other moment in history.
Actually, it has happened: when Hitler decided to kill the Jews.” Such remarks were met with strong condemnation from Israeli leaders, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserting that Lula had disrespected the memory of Holocaust victims and vilified the Jewish state.
Moreover, Lula’s defense of Putin regarding Navalny’s death further fueled the controversy. He expressed skepticism about attributing Navalny’s demise to foul play, suggesting that a coroner’s report would provide clarity.
This stance contrasted sharply with the views of many Western leaders who held Putin’s government responsible for Navalny’s death.
Israeli leaders across the political spectrum denounced Lula’s comments. Prime Minister Netanyahu characterized his comparison as a disgrace to Holocaust victims and condemned his demonization of Israel.
President Isaac Herzog emphasized the existential threat posed by Hamas and decried the distortion of history inherent in equating Israel’s actions with Hitler’s atrocities.
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant labeled Lula’s accusation of Israel perpetrating a Holocaust as outrageous and abhorrent, asserting that such rhetoric violated the values of the free world.
Lula’s recent anti-Israel rhetoric, coupled with his promise to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) despite concerns over its staff’s involvement in terrorist activities, further heightened tensions.
These remarks have underscored the complex geopolitical dynamics surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the broader implications of international leaders’ statements on sensitive issues.
