So when Smokey saw Juliet, did it actually flash them with light? Or was Smokey seeing light? My theory is, part of the others 'brainwashing' is armoring "the others" minds against Smokey's mind reading capabilities. In that case the flashes were the equivalent of Smokey bouncing his head off a psychic brick wall. What do you think?
I had the exact same thought myself bro. Note the lack of any imagery in the smoke, unlike when it scanned Eko.
Doc: my guess is that Smokey senses psyches, then assess - maybe acts, with the light, similar to radar, sonar, optical, infrared, etc. sensors that are commonly used today - RichPundit
I think what we saw was the "bright white light" that Locke told Eko he saw in E305 (the event happened in E104, but he finally spoke about it in 305). I think the monster has at least two aspects to it, the shadowy smoke and the bright white light. When we saw the flashes of light, we weren't panning through the monster as in E210 with Eko, it was off camera completely. My two cents.
I immediately thought of a large camera flash, but that wouldn't make much sense, would it? :-) I don't recall ever seeing that last, or hearing the sound associated with it, before...is that correct?
That's a good point. Both during Locke's encounter (with the bright light) and Left Behind's "flash" scene, the camera's perspective was from IT'S viewpoint. It didn't show the black cloud. So... what does that mean? Who knows!
In Eko's scene we were clearly inside the monster.
In Juliet's scene, we are close up to her face. Between her and the monster really. They didn't want to show how those flashes were made, or maybe it would just look stupid imo.
You can also see Juliet wince and react at the flashes, so I think those were actual lights not images inside the monster. Actualy I'm pretty sure of it.
I disagree. Smokey knew what he was looking at/reading. That's why he was in such a hurry...maybe to get back and tell whoever it's working with (Other Others underground?) that it found one of Them out and about. I saw several smokies form a Mega-Voltron Smokie before it hit the fence, and then seperated and reformed when it disappeared. I know we've seen this before(multi-Smokies), but maybe it went back to get the other Smokies because Juliet and the Others are that badass.
