We reported back in October that director Lars von Trier was setting up a new film project and now it seems he has found his star. Deadline New York is reporting that Kirsten Dunst has landed the lead role in Melancholia (A psychological disaster film).
Dunst takes over for Penélope Cruz, who was in negotiations for the role before signing on for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. It was said that Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, Alexander Skarsgård, Stellan Skarsgård and Udo Kier are also attached to roles in the film as well.
The film is set to start shooting in July, with filming taking place in Sweden.
Several big actors are going to work together in Lars von Triers upcoming movie ”Melancholia”. Kirsten Dunst has signed on for the lead, and actors like Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland and Stellan Skarsgård have also been signed.

Huge secrecy is surrounding “Melancholia” which will be shot in Trollhättan starting July – and yes, von Triers Swedish favourite actor Stellan Skarsgård has also been casted for a part.

Exactly what “Melancholia” is about is still a secret. All Lars von Trier has revealed is that it’s a science fiction movie, and it’s also been revealed that it will probably be about how an alien planet is close to collide with Earth. Lars von Trier has been known to keeping most of the plot in his movies a big secret up until the premiere.
– At this point I can either confirm nor deny that any of these actors are in the clear to make this movie, says von Triers business partner Aalbaek Jensen to TT Spektra earlier this Friday.
An earlier rumour made it out that Penelope Cruz was going to play the lead in “Melancholia”. Back then Peter Aalbaek Jensen confirmed to TT Spektra that there had been negotiations with the Spanish actress, but that in the end there was no deal due to her busy schedule.
According to sources TT Spektra has learnt that instead it will now be Kirsten Dunst, known mostly for the “Spiderman” movies, that will play the lead.
She will be joined in Trollhättan by Charlotte Gainsbourg (winner last year in Cannes for her part in Lars von Triers movie “Antichrist”, “24″ star Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, Alexander Skarsgård, Stellan Skarsgård and Udo Kier, another one of von Triers favourite actors.
The shooting of “Melancholia” is planned to be Trollhättan from July to September, and a probable premiere will be at the Cannes Festival in 2011.
