Mozilla Servers Weather 2 Million Firefox DownloadsUnlike last year's inaugural release, no prime-time downtime for the open-source browser.
Mozilla's servers weathered the release of Firefox 1.5 much better than last year's roll-out of 1.0, a Web performance company said Thursday, with the systems showing no evidence of downtime.
Mozilla's distributed network of mirror sites in 30 countries, said U.K.-based Netcraft, "appears to be handling current download demand with few difficulties."
Last year, Mozilla didn't fare nearly as well. Within hours of the release of Firefox 1.0 on Nov. 9, 2004, the Mozilla site had availability problems and showed response times so slow that some users were forced to Google's cached sites to get their copy of the browser.
Netcraft has posted a dynamically-updated set of performance charts for Mozilla's servers.
Mozilla Corp.'s executives, meanwhile, claimed that
more than 2 million downloads of Firefox 1.5 have already been processed
since the browser's late Tuesday debut."Demand continues to be high, greatly exceeding what we saw last year with the release of Firefox 1.0," said Chris Beard, Mozilla's head of products, on his blog.
Firefox 1.5 is available from the newly activated Mozilla.com site. Although the domain was registered
more than 11 years ago, it was only brought online with the release of 1.5.
The company's SpreadFirefox marketing site, however, still remains offline as
