We are very sorry to hear that you have misplaced your nominated account password - your unique encryption key. Security and privacy of our users however is our number one priority.
Please make sure you are using the latest version of Mozilla Firefox browser (incl. Mega extension 2.0.+
https://mega.co.nz/#firefox) or Google Chrome (+ Mega extension
https://mega.co.nz/#chrome) as these currently perform best with most Operating Systems. Third recommended browser is Opera Next.
Please ensure you have our browser extension installed.
Your MEGA password is more than just a password - it unlocks your master encryption key, without which your data is entirely unreadable. Therefore, there are two kinds of password reset: With or without providing a copy of your backed up master key. With the key, you can just set a new password and retain your existing account. Without the key, you can park your existing account and start a new one under your existing account's e-mail address. We recommend that you do keep a backup of your master key in a safe location at all times, just in case! Read below how to export your key and how to reset your password.
If you have data uploaded and don't remember your password:
OPTION A - We now provide a safety net for the proactive forgetful.
1. Export your master crypto key as soon as you validate your account -
https://mega.co.nz/#backup2. Store it in a safe place. You can save your master crypto key in your local storage (PC) or in a document you will have backed up elsewhere.
3. Forget your password
4. Request a password reset link by e-mail -
https://mega.co.nz/#recovery5. Set a new password after providing the exported master key
=> If you have a backup of your master crypto key you can reset your password and no data from your account will be lost. Your data will re-appear upon the next login with the reset password.
=> You can still export your master key now if have an active MEGA session in any other browser on this or any other computer. If this device does not support the Crypto key export - you can download and backup your data at least.
If you do not have any other active MEGA session open you can no longer decrypt your existing account but you can start a new one under the same email address =>
OPTION B - If you are a not-so-proactive forgetful, there is now a workflow that permits the re-use of your primary e-mail address for a fresh and empty MEGA account (with optional retroactive recovery):
1. Forget your password
2. Request a password reset link by e-mail -
https://mega.co.nz/#recovery3. Park your existing account and create a new one with the same email address. Your data will be saved for 60 days on our servers
4. If you remember / recover your old password within the 60 days period: =>
5. Contact the friendly MEGA support team at support@mega.co.nz and ask them to restore the parked account
6. Log into your restored account
=> Due to our end-to-end encryption paradigm you will not be able to access your data without your password or backup of your Master key. You can park your existing account and start a fresh one under the same email address. In the event you recover your 'parked' account password contact us for assistance. Your data will be retained in your 'parked' account for at least 60 days.
SUMMARY:
1. If you do have your Master crypto key backed up - you can reset the password to your account and your data will stay.
2. If you do not have your Master crypto key backed up - you can re-register with the same email address however your data will be lost after the 60 day 'recovery' period.
